Rev. Michael Ellis Hatfield "Mike"

Rev. Michael Hatfield “Mike” passed away peacefully on June 3rd 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and devotion to his family. He was 79 years old. Born on December 28, 1946, in Sumter, South Carolina, Mike was the son of the late Lucian Herbert Hatfield and Mary Ellis Hatfield. He was raised in Sumter and developed a lifelong love of learning, ministry, and serving others. Mike attended Anderson College, Furman University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in preparation for a life dedicated to Christian ministry. He also proudly served his country in the United States Navy. On March 2, 1968, he married the love of his life, Nancy Nichols Hatfield. The two first met in the cafeteria at Anderson College and shared a loving marriage until her passing. Throughout his ministry, Mike faithfully served congregations including Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church in Edgefield, South Carolina, and First Baptist Church of Kent Island, Maryland. In addition to his pastoral work, he spent time as a disc jockey, a role that reflected his outgoing personality and love of connecting with people. Mike enjoyed reading, studying history, walking, camping, and spending time in nature. He was known for his unwavering faith, gentle spirit, thoughtful wisdom, and deep love for his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Nichols Hatfield; his parents, Lucian Herbert Hatfield and Mary Ellis Hatfield; his brother, Herbert Hatfield; and his sister, Helen Donald. He is survived by his children, Jeff Hatfield (Tammy), Bethany Martin (Mike), Dawn Meyers (John), and Adrienne Melton (Dink); his sister, Rose Spradley; and his sister, Susan Saunders. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Heather Barberio (Jonathan) and their children, Finn, Benji, and Abigail; Lauren Duncan (Chad) and their daughter, Everly; Emily Bruchey (Kyle) and their children, Braelynn and Beau; Tyler Meyers; Kyle Meyers; and Kayla Meyers. Michael's family finds comfort in the countless lives he touched through his ministry, friendship, and example of Christian faith. His steadfast love, compassionate heart, and dedication to serving God and others will be remembered by all who knew him. A Graveside service to honor Mike's life will be held at Sudlersville Cemetery on June 9th at 11am. A Celebration of Life will be held at Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church, 1194 Meeting Street Road, Edgefield, SC 29824 on June 27th at 1pm In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compass Hospice of Centreville, Maryland, or Samaritan's Purse in Boone, North Carolina.
