Mia Johanna White

On Tuesday April 21, Mia Johanna White took her final rest from her year and a half battle with cancer. In her final moments, she was peaceful and surrounded by family, friends and so much love. In her 28 years, her light impacted so many people with her warmth, spirit, kindness, humor, intelligence and compassion. But that light has not gone out. It shines in every good thing in this word; the sunrise, the sunset, the ocean waves on the beach, the birds singing in the wee morning hours, the flowers that bloom every spring, the music we love, and the kindness we show one another. Mia began making her impact on this world on November 14, 1997. As a child, you could see her good nature and gentle spirit in the way she hugged a new friend when they met for the first time, the soft kisses on the cheek, or covering you with a blanket when she found you napping on the couch. Even her kindergarten teacher said “there is just something about Mia”. Mia loves music, perhaps something inherited from her mother. They often turned each other on to new music or old forgotten gems. Mia’s first concert was to see the Allman Brothers with her parents when she was 9 years old. Her favorite band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This was a welcome relief to her mother as she could finally get a reprieve from years of listening to pop music in the car. Her father always talks about the day she was born. When Mia heard his voice for the fist time, she turned her head his way, recognizing his voice from hearing it while she was in her mother’s womb. He will always remember that moment vividly, even if he forgets everything else! She loves her younger sister Sarah deeply and was often very protective of her. They did have their share of squabbles, as siblings often do. Sarah for sure gave as good as she got but their bond is strong. To hear them carry on and laugh together was priceless. It was music to their parents’ ears. Mia grew up in Edgewater Maryland and graduated from South River High School. She worked for Free People in the Annapolis Mall for nearly 10 years where she made close friends with her co-workers and many of her customers. In recent years, Mia worked for Barton and Gray Mariners club where she was a yacht stewardess. She found so much enjoyment being able to spend time on the Chesapeake Bay and being able to curate a special occasion be it catering or making special flower arrangements. In the winter, she would work in South Miami Beach for the season where she made even MORE friends. South Miami Beach suited her perfectly as she loves sun, fun and good vibes! Most recently, she worked for Chesapeake Whalertown in Grasonville, Maryland as an administrative assistant where she made even MORE friends. Her parents are forever grateful they gave her the opportunity to work during her illness. For Mia, having a purpose helped enable her to maintain a sense of normality while she was going through treatment. Mia is survived by her parents Joseph and Johanna White, her sister Sarah, grandmother Gerda Nutwell, her uncle James Anderson and his wife Susan, her aunt Karla Gomoljak and her husband Tim; her aunt Susanne Burgos; her uncle Marcus White; her aunt Vicki Budden and her husband Richard. She is also survived by numerous cousins, her “ride or die” girls and her amazing boyfriend Tim Patterson. Mia is predeceased by her beloved grandmother, Shirley White, who is now holding her tight and giving her pop-tarts. A celebration of Mia’s life (aka Miapalooza!) will take place at Silver Swan Bayside, 412 Congressional Drive, Stevensville, Maryland on Tuesday June 9 from 5pm to 9pm. Dress code is casual, beachy, boho chic and anything green. While there will be cocktail-style catering, guests may bring appetizers, desserts or her favorite snack. Mia loves a good charcuterie board!
