Mary Joanne Sherbert

Mary Joanne Sherbert "Mary Jo", to all that knew her passed away peacefully from Alzheimer's on March 18, 2025 at the age of 84. Mary Jo was born on December 21, 1940 in Annapolis, Md to Joseph and Mary Griscom, she grew up in Eastport, a suburb of Annapolis with her sister Linda and brothers, Joe and Donny. Mary Jo graduated from Annapolis High School in 1958. After high school she took a secretarial position with Chesapeake Bay Affairs, now known as the Dept of Natural Resources. In 1960, Mary Jo was introduced to her husband Irv by her brother Joe and Irv's brother Freddy who were friends and thought they should meet, after a short courtship they were married on February 12, 1961. Mary Jo and Irv had 3 children and she left state service once her youngest son was born to be a stay at home mom. After her children were in school she decided to go back to work and took a title clerk position with Koons Ford of Annapolis but when she had an opportunity to go back to DNR she came full circle, she worked in Payroll and Accounts Payable before she settled in Accounts Receivables where she stayed until she retired in July 2014. Mary Jo and Irv were avid campers and were members of the Chesapeake Winnies RV club, they always enjoyed camping, they started out with a small popup trailer but while working at Koons Ford of Annapolis they were introduced to RV camping and that began their real love of camping. They started attending many campouts and became great ambassador's for Koons RV department within the camping community and they made many lasting friendships. One of their favorite camping vacations was their yearly trips to Mrytle Beach, South Carolina with family and friends. Mary Jo loved spending time with family, she hosted all the holidays and Sunday dinners for many years. She liked going shopping and doing crafts, she learned to do many crafts on campouts from a fellow camper and she would do craft classes at many DNR picnics. She enjoyed cooking and baking, she was known for making the best desserts, her Better then Sex cake was always a hit at DNR luncheons and often requested. She learned canning from her mom, especially apple butter, the best apple butter that has been passed down to the next generations. Mary Jo was loved by everyone, she was a very sweet, friendly person that always had a smile for you, she had a great smile and a laugh that you knew was her. Mary Jo is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Irving Sherbert, her parents Joseph and Mary Griscom and her brother Donald Griscom. She is survived by her 3 children, daughter Terry Kelsey (Scott), sons Jimmy Sherbert (Heather), and John Sherbert (Martha), her 6 grandchildren, Amanda MacLane (Scott), Chris Sheckells, James Sherbert, Megan Kelsey, Shelby Sherbert and Emily Sherbert 7 great grandchildren, Zander MacLane, Aria MacLane, Ezra MacLane, Gemma MacLane, Piper MacLane, Jennavieve Sherbert, Jewels Sherbert, her brother Joseph Griscom III, sister Linda Parris and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am Sunday on May 4th, 2025 at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Rd. Chester, MD 21619. A celebration of life will immediately follow the service at the American Legion, post 278, 800 Romancoke Rd. Stevensville, MD 21666.
