Mary A. Craig

Mary A. Craig of Easton, MD, died on Monday, July 30, 2007, at Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 59. Born March 26, 1948, in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of Harry Acker of Aberdeen, MD, and the late Mary Campion Acker. A 1966 graduate of Perryville High School, she received her undergraduate degree in sociology from Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA, in 1970 and her Masters Degree in instruction and curriculum development from Western Maryland College in 2004. She was a 5th grade teacher at the Country School in Easton, MD, for 32 years, specializing in reading, language arts, and social studies. Prior to that, she taught for four years for the Talbot County Public Schools. She was a member of numerous professional associations on the state and national level for teachers of reading programs, and was nominated to Who’s Who of America’s Teachers multiple times. She was responsible for compiling and editing submissions for the Cougar, the student literary review at the Country School. Former students would often visit with her when they returned to Easton after graduation. Mrs. Craig especially enjoyed visits from former pupils, and later in her career, teaching of children of past students. She was a volunteer for the Talbot County Mental Health Association and a member of Perryville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Craig loved spending time with her family and visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting, and was an avid fan of Baltimore Orioles baseball and University of Maryland basketball. In addition to her father, Mrs. Craig is survived by her husband, Charles B. “Chip” Craig, Jr., whom she married August 8, 1970; her son, John A. “Jack” Craig of Easton, MD; a brother, Harry J. Acker and his wife Kathy of Virginia Beach, VA; and a nephew, Thomas F. Acker and his wife Kelli also of Virginia Beach. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 6, 2007, at 11:00 AM at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Easton, MD. Friends may call on Sunday, August 5, 2007, from 2 to 5 PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, MD. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1306, Easton, MD 21601.
