Marie Alverta Coleman

Marie Alverta Coleman (Miss Marie) died Saturday June 5, 2010, born March 18, 1915 the daughter of Edwin F. Bangs and Lillie M. Lambert. Miss Marie grew up in Baltimore, graduating from Western High School, Class of 1933 and attended the Peabody Institute of Music. She married Hollis H. Hopkins, Jr which ended in divorce. In 1950 she married William Herman Stevens and moved to Kent Island. Mr. Stevens passed away in 1982, in 1984 she married Roy Golt and he passed away in 1988. In 1994 Miss Marie married A. Purnell Coleman he passed away in 2001. Music and love of God have always been a very important part of her life. Always played at Sunday school or church, played and entertained soldiers and veterans hospital and USO during WW II in MD and DC. Miss Marie was organist at the KIUMC for many years, played for the KI Baptist Church and at the age of 90 formally retired as organist at the Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church. She had entertained at all the eastern shore senior centers with sing alongs played for school children for their special concerts in QA County. Miss Marie is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hopkins Whaley; son in law Edward, (Snapper) Thomas; eight grandchildren, Elinor Warring, John L. Whaley, Jr, Sharon Whaley Tryon, Clayland H. Whaley (Kim), Valerie A. Ivins (Bob), Marc E. Whaley (Crystal), Edward C. Thomas (Beth) & Barbara L. Hunter (Kelley); 3 step grandchildren, CDR Wilbert Elwood Dawson (Louise), Lola Jean Thomas (Harold) & USN Chief-Radio M. Alvin Dawson (Sheila) and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband she is predeceased by a daughter, Mildred Marie Thomas; stepdaughter, Dorothy S. Dawson, step grandson, Warren Dawson. The visitation will be held June 8, 2010 at the Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church 205 Medical Center Grasonville, MD from 2PM to 4Pm and 6Pm to 8PM. The funeral service will be held 11AM on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church, 205 Medical Center, Grasonville, MD then the interment will immediately follow in Stevensville Cemetery in Stevensville, MD In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church, 205 Medical Centre Road / P.O.
