Margaret Kathryn Wolcott Selby

Margaret Kathryn Wolcott Selby, of Centreville, died at the Memorial Hospital at Easton on Sunday, December 24, 2000. She was 77. Born Feb. 21, 1923 in Wye Mills, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Milton and Margaret Bennett Fesymer Wolcott of Centreville. Her paternal grandparents were the late David B. F. and Elizabeth Roe Wolcott and her maternal grandparents were the late Joseph (a Civil War veteran) and Mary Catherine Harper Fesymer. From an early age, "Peggy" spent most of her life as a resident of Centreville, participating in local church choirs and community music groups entertaining throughout the area. After graduating from Centreville High School in 1940, she received her B. A. Degree from Washington College in 1943 later an M. A. Degree from the University of Maryland. During World War II, she worked in the Personnel Department at the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore. Following the war, she began her teaching career which covered a span of twenty -four years. She first taught in Baltimore City for two years, then in the Stevensville High School, the Centreville High School and the Centreville Middle School where she taught History, English, Art and Music. She retired in 1974 as a Music teacher. Over the many years, she had organized choruses in the schools and presented choral and stage productions at Christmas, during the Spring and at high school graduations. A member of the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association, she was also a member of the Queen Anne County Retired Teachers'' Association and the National Education Association. A long-time member of the Centreville and Queen Anne''s County Band Boosters, she was also a member of the Septum Homemakers, the Junior Women''s Club, Queen Anne Historical Society and the Upper Shore Genealogical Society of Maryland. Active in church, she was a member of St. Paul''s Episcopal Church, Centreville, where she was a member of the church choir for eighteen years, a member of the Alter Guild and the Executive Board of the Episcopal Churchwomen. After retiring, she was a Founding Member of the Music Advisory Committee at Chesapeake Community College serving from 1982 to 1988 and participated as an adjudicator for the Arts Contest activities. In 1994, she was appointed by the then Governor William D. Schaeffer to the Board of Trustees of the Upper Shore Community Mental Health Center. In May of 1987, she was formally honored during a banquet of Centreville High School Alumni Association for her faithful services to education and the community as a member of the Centreville High School Faculty. Mrs. Selby is survived by her husband, John W. Selby whom she married in 1943; a daughter, Margaret Susan Selby of Centreville and a brother, J. Robert Wolcott of Easton. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 29th, at 2 PM at St. Paul''s Episcopal Church, Centreville. The Rev. William Alford will officiate assisted by The Rev. David F. Gearhart. Requested organ music will begin at 1:40 PM Burial will be at Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville.
