Margaret Clausen Paul

Margaret (Peggy) Clausen Paul passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2012, surrounded by children, at her home in Trappe, MD. Peggy and her husband, James (Jim) Paul, who passed away in September 2011, retired to Trappe in 1994. But their deep love of the Eastern Shore dated to the beginning of their marriage in 1948, when Jim’s parents, Bill and Addie Paul, bought a place in Easton. Peggy was born in Chestnut Hill, PA, in 1927 to William Clausen and Margaret Morris Clausen. Peggy attended Springside School in Chestnut Hill, graduating in 1945, and married Jim, also of Chestnut Hill, in June of 1948. Peggy and Jim lived in Washington, DC; Chapel Hill, NC; and Berwyn, PA, before heading off with their three children to spend six years in Ethiopia during the 1960s. Jim founded the law school there at what was then Haile Selassie University, and Peggy worked at the English school, which their children attended. After returning from Ethiopia, Peggy and Jim lived in South Orange, NJ, where Peggy worked for the Raymond Connolly Company, a real estate brokerage for more than 20 years, and volunteered in Newark as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) providing support for children who had been abused and neglected. Upon their retirement to Trappe, Peggy and Jim became members of Third Haven Friends Meeting. Peggy continued to volunteer as a CASA for almost 15 more years, and was also a volunteer with the Talbot County Hospice Foundation and with the RISE reading enrichment program at White March Elementary School in Trappe until she gave up all volunteer activities to care for Jim in the final two years of his life. Peggy will be remembered for her warm, caring and generous spirit, her feisty personality, her love of friends and family, the pleasure she took in her beloved dogs and cats, and her fondness for the Eastern Shore. Peggy is survived by her three children, Nicholas Paul of San Diego; Molly Paul of Concord, MA; and Adelaide Paul of Philadelphia; her seven grandchildren; her two great-grandchildren, her brother-in-law, Peter Paul, of Cambridge, MD; and sister-in-law, Patsy Paul of Towson, MD. A memorial service will be held April 28 at Third Haven Friends Meeting in Easton, MD at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be sent to the Talbot County Humane Society, 7894 Ocean Gateway, P.O.
