Marcia Taube Demarest

Surrounded by her family, Marcia Taube Demarest of Chestertown, Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 7th at Chester River Hospital, Chestertown, MD. She was 85. She was born in Pueblo, Colorado the daughter of the late, Henning Oriole and Ida Josephine Campbell Taube. She was raised in Ithaca, NY where she graduate from Ithaca High School Class of 1942 she earned a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics at Cornell University also in Ithaca. On February 24, 1946 she married Donald M. Demarest of Hempstead, NY and they raised their family primarily in West Springfield, MA and Wallingford, PA. In 1992 they moved to Heron Point in Chestertown, Maryland. While living in Wallingford, PA, she was a long-time volunteer at the Selene Natural Foods Coop, the Helen Furness Public Library, active in environmental issues, and worked for architect Richard Chalfont in Chadds Ford. Avid Chesapeake Bay sailors, she and Don were founding members of the Bohemia River Marina Sailing Association (BRMSA) and made many a road and sailing trip to their traditional family vacation spot of Oak Bluffs, Marthas Vineyard. She and Don were among the earliest residences of Heron Point (retirement community) in Chestertown. She (along with Don) were founders and/or active participants in many of the activities and committees at Heron Point. For 17 years she played a central role in the Heron Point gift shop and was a leading volunteer for the marketing committee. According to one Heron Point resident “Everything special about Heron Point, Marcia and Don helped create.” In addition to her husband she is survived by daughters, Cynthia D. Dennehy of Exeter, NH and Susan D. Ridgway of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands; sons, James Monroe Demarest II of Houston, TX and Peter Donald Demarest of Glen Mills, PA; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, and her cat, Shadow. A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, January 16, at 11:00am in Wesley Hall Heron Point. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to either the Heron Point Community Enrichment Fund, Heron Point, Chestertown, MD 21620 or the Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins.
