Mamie A. Ayers

Mamie A. Ayers entered full eternal life on Monday, December 20, 2010. She passed away at her home in Unionville, Maryland. Mrs. Ayers was born January 1, 1938 in Unionville. She was the only child born to the late Mamie Estelle Dill De Shields and the late Herbert Albert De Shields, both of Easton and, later, Unionville. She attended Robert Russo Moton Elementary School and Moton High School. She graduated from high school in 1956. Mrs. Ayers was the longtime secretary in the main office of Easton High School where she worked for 30 years. Her career started in 1966 at Moton High School as an administrative secretary. The next year she moved to Easton Middle School. Later, she worked at Moton High School where she served until 1971, after which she joined the Easton High Staff. During Mrs. Ayers’ career she assisted more than a dozen principals. She also traveled with students to visit historically black Colleges and Universities, and other colleges, introducing those students to college life. She was visited for many years before and after retirement by former Easton High students and teachers who thanked her for caring so about their lives. Beyond her work in the public school system, Mrs. Ayers was employed for several years in the customer service office of Peebles Department store in Easton. She was a well-known seamstress with varied clientele throughout the Eastern Shore. Not one to live a limited life, Mrs. Ayers filled her years with a generous supply of good times. She enjoyed a vibrant life filled with plenty of laughs and great food. The detail that she applied to tailoring and needlepoint extended to her social schedule. Her Labor Day cookouts were greatly anticipated by her many loving family members and dear friends. The diverse cuisine and festive atmosphere compelled many to travel from states throughout the Northeast to attend the annual affair. Mrs. Ayers had tremendous skill with both needlepoint and knitting, creating many intricate designs that displayed significant artistic merit. She also was an avid reader with particular interest in detective and foreign intrigue novels. Her curious mind enjoyed the challenge of assembling complex jigsaw puzzles, word search and playing board games with family members. An avid traveler, Mrs. Ayers had recently returned from a summer 2010 trip to Bermuda. She also traveled extensively with her father to Walt Disney World and nearby states. She also attended significant events occurring in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Ayers had been married to the late Mr. William K. Ayers of Easton. Together, they had three children, the late Mr. Erik B. Ayers, Mrs. Tammy A. Harvey of Somerset, New Jersey, and Mr. William M. Ayers of Baltimore, Maryland. She also was the loving grandmother to four grandchildren: Ms. Ayana S. Harvey of Bermuda, Mr. David J. Harvey of Somerset, New Jersey, Ms. Ashlyn C. Ayers of Baltimore, Maryland and Ms. Aja B. Harvey of Tuskegee, Alabama. She also leaves to mourn her passing one son-in-law, Peter C. Harvey of Somerset, New Jersey, one Aunt, Shirley Dill and a host of family. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 30 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private.
