Lula Mae Hutchison

Lula Mae Clendaniel Hutchison passed away on April 9, 2024, at the age 95 years old. Mae was born on July 16, 1928 in Stevensville, Maryland, to Marion Oscar and Edna Mae Benton Clendaniel. Her mother died when she was only four and she, her brother and sister were raised by their grandmother, Lulu Virginia Gardner Clendaniel. Mae married the love of her life, James Alexander Hutchison, “Jimmy”, in 1947 and had two sons, James Robert Hutchison and Daniel Martin Hutchison. She welcomed step-daughter Constance Montgomery into the family and loved her as her own. Mae and Jimmy built their home in Benton’s Pleasure in Chester. In 2003, she became one of the first residents of Terrapin Grove in Stevensville and enjoyed many friendships, shared meals, Bingo and working jig-saw puzzles. “A-Mae-zing” Mae was very creative. Over the years, she sewed clothes, cross-stitched tablecloths, samplers and did needlepoint. Her hobbies included doing ceramics and she gave every family household a full nativity set to treasure. She lovingly crocheted hundreds of afghans. She was seldom without her bag which carried her latest crochet project, book and Word Search. Mae was a member of Kent Island United Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer in the Mary-Ruth Circle. She was recognized as “The Hat Lady”, wearing a hat to church each Sunday. Mae was a member of Chester Homemakers and handled Membership for the Kent Island Heritage Society for many years. She was the keeper of family histories for the Hutchison family and for her family with deep roots on Kent Island. Mae lost her husband in 1985 and her son, James Robert (Bob) Hutchison in 2021. She is predeceased by “Brother Jimmy”, James Oscar Clendaniel, in 2015 and Connie Montgomery in 2013. Mae is survived by her son Daniel (Beth), and her sister, Evelyn Clendaniel Miles. She was Mom-Mom Mae to granddaughters, Dina Hutchison Clark (Vince), Stacey Hutchison White (Brian), Dani Hutchison, Nikki Montgomery-Lambert (Brian) and grandson Cody Montgomery. She has 7 great grandchildren, Vincent (Madison), Joshua and Austin Clark, Erin White Wharton (Bryce), Cassidy White, Rosemary and Hugh Lambert. Great-great granddaughter Norah Catherine Wharton brought a big smile to her face. Mae is also survived by daughter-in-law Alva Palmer Hutchison and many nieces and nephews. Service will be held on Monday, April 15, 2024 at Kent Island Methodist Church, 2739 Cox Neck RD, Chester Maryland 21619. Visitation begins at 11 AM with Service at Noon. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Easton. A time of food and continued celebration will be in the Fellowship Hall of the church following the burial. In lieu of flowers, remember Mae with a memorial donation to Kent Island Heritage Society (PO Box 321, Stevensville, MD 21666) or to her church, Kent Island Methodist Church (PO Box 308, Chester, MD 21619)
