Lois H. Scarbro

Lois H. Scarbro of Centreville, MD died at her home on Tuesday, June 21, 2005. She was 80. Born April 12, 1925 in Durbin, West Virginia, she was the tenth of eleven children of the late Stephen Hamilton and Annie Vaughan Morris Hiner. She graduated from Green Bank High School, Green Bank, WV and later received a diploma from Capital City Commercial College, Charleston, WV. She worked for the W. Virginia Dept of Rehabilitation, W. Virginia Dept. of Unemployment and the Atlantic Greyhound Bus Company in Charleston, WV as a stenographer. She also worked for the 2nd Army Chaplains and Headquarters 2nd Army (now 1st Army), first as a stenographer then as a secretary at Fort George G. Meade, MD. On December 30, 1950 she married Romie L. Scarbro of St. Charleston, WV. From June 1977 until June 1978 she lived in Teheran, Iran. She was a member of Septem Homemakers for 35 years, and served as President several times and was International chairman for 8 years. As International Chairman for the county, she set up and conducted many excellent tours; including three to embassies in Washington, DC; two to New Windsor, MD, the Church World Service collection center and International Gift Shop, one to the State Dept and FBI in Washington, DC and one to Baltimore to the Immigration Center. She was a regular attendee of leadership training, both day meetings and summer courses. Her community activities included, refreshment chairman and cookie chairman working with Brownies and Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts; taking the Census in 1979 and 1980; also, she and Dan Tabler compiled a local reference book, The History of Queen Anne’s County Homemakers which is in the County Library, working on elections for 30 years, helping at Queen Anne’s 4-H Fair for 20 years, helping with Queen Anne’s County Health Fair with the dinners until 2001. She enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, quilting, playing the piano, stamp collecting, various kinds of needlework, knitting, crocheting, upholstering and making lined draperies. She also did volunteer reading to Kindergarten. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scarbro is survived by a son, Thomas R. Scarbro and his wife, Carol of Hollidaysburg, PA; two daughters, Lois L. “Lollie” Dixon and her husband, Lee of Marydel, MD and Sarah Ann Scarbro of Centreville, MD; two brothers, Ben Hiner of Kinsale, VA and Richard “Dick” Hiner of Durbin, WV and three grandchildren, Drew and Jared Scarbro and Norman Lee Dixon III. She was pre-deceased by eight brothers and sisters, Dolly Hertig, Helen Bassett, Virginia Maule, Stephen Hiner, Mary Rives Kegley, John Hiner, Monna Martin and Preston Hiner. Funeral services will be held at the Centreville United Methodist Church, Centreville, MD on Saturday, June 25, 2005 at 12:00 noon where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Centreville United Methodist Church, 608 Church Hill Road, Centreville, MD 21617; Durbin United Methodist Church, Durbin, WV 26264 and Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc., 300 Del Rhodes Avenue, Queenstown, MD 21658.
