Leroy D. Sadler

Leroy Dawson Sadler, known by his family and friends as “Monk” died, Sunday, February 7, 2010 at his home in Tilghman. He was 88. Born March 10, 1921, he was the son of the late Gustav Sadler and Ruby Lednum. He attended Tilghman School throughout his childhood, until a sudden asthma condition prevented his completion of school. He then became employed at the Tilghman Packing Company, operating the boiler that provided the steam for their machinery. After 3 years of employment, he enlisted into active duty on Aril 8, 1944, serving during WWII in Germany. While stationed in France, he was wounded in action and received the “Purple Heart”. He worked his way up from a Private to a Sergeant, becoming a squad leader for his unit. Then upon receiving a promotion to Staff Sergeant, he served with the 10th Engineer Battalion in the European Theatre of Operations. Having 30 men under his supervision, he was responsible for requisition, storage and accountability for all supplies, machinery, and laborers under his “Foreman Construction” military title. In 1946, he received an “Honorable Discharge” and returned home with numerous decorations and citations, including the Bronze Star. On September 1, 1946, he married Phyllis Harrison and worked as a waterman throughout his life until he retired in 1998. His love of working on the water and his skill in construction contributed to his success in building his home, three boats, two of which he used during his years on the water, the other for his son, and the many dredge boat models that he gifted to family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the VFW Memorial Post 5118 and a member of the American Legion Post #91 of Cambridge. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles “Gustin” Sadler and Frederick K. Sadler, and a grandson, Philip R. Sadler. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, two sons and their wives, Roy and Colleen Sadler of Tilghman, and Ken and Janet Sadler of Easton; a brother in law and his wife, Ray and Lorraine Harrison of Wolford; a granddaughter, Mindy J. Sadler, of McDaniel; two great-grandchildren, Tahlia and Nestor Pabon of McDaniel; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the Tilghman United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Tilghman Memorial Cemetery.
