Leroy Layfield III

Leroy “Lee” R. Layfield III of Rock Hall, Maryland died August 2, 2006 at his home. He was 55. Mr. Layfield was born on April 25, 1951 in Chester, Pennsylvania to Leroy R. Jr. and Lorraine Iannucci Layfield of New Castle, Delaware. He graduated from William Penn High School, Class of 1970. He worked as a model maker with the United States Government. His love for boats and the water brought him to Rock Hall in 1982. Mr. Layfield worked with Gratitude Marina for five years before taking a position with Sailing Emporium as the marina manager. He was active as a search and rescue diver, served on the Board of Directors at Rock Hall Volunteer Fire Company, and was a member of Sergeant Preston Ashley American Legion Post #228, Rock Hall, Maryland. Mr. Layfield was a Reserve Officer with Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police where he received Reserve Officer of the Year in 2002. He was also an active participant with the Rock Hall Fireworks Display and very involved with the fire company’s Halloween events. Mr. Layfield was a model airplane enthusiast, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sailing and loved animals. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Pearl Hope Layfield, whom he married May 27, 2006, one step daughter: Amber N. Wersten of Rock Hall, Maryland, one step son: Joey M. Collazo, Jr. of Rock Hall, Maryland, three brothers: Lance B. Layfield of San Diego, California, Lloyd Layfield of Wilmington, Delaware and Larry Layfield of Conowingo, Maryland, three sisters: Lori Dionisi of Delaware City, Delaware, Linda Hershey of Newark, Delaware, and Lisa McGinnes of Wilmington, Delaware, maternal grandmother: Antoinette Iannucci of Wilmington, Delaware, one granddaughter, Alexis Marie Mitchell of Rock Hall, Maryland, father and mother in law: Joseph W. and Pearl Ann Hope of Centreville, Maryland and several nieces and nephews. He has joined in heaven with his niece and nephew, Jammi and Ronni Wooster. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 7, 2006 at 12:30 p.m. in Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Maryland. Family and friends may call between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Burial will be private.
