Leonard Dixon

Leonard “Frog” Dixon of Cecilton died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, in his home. He was 82. Mr. Dixon was born in Earleville, son of the late Leonard and Anna (Holden) Dixon. He was a self-employed farmer until 1964. In 1964, he went to work for the Georgetown Yacht Basin and worked there for many years. He loved collecting frogs, hence, his nickname. He enjoyed hunting with his friends. He loved baseball, and for many years played shortstop on the Cecilton town team. In his younger years, he played on the George Biddle High School baseball team, and in 1939, when they won the championship for Cecil County. He also enjoyed bowling and other sports until past injuries forced him to quit playing. In the early years of his sons, he was involved in Scouting. Mr. Dixon was a Master Mason, a past worshipful master of the Cecil Lodge 125, A.F. & A.M., Chesapeake City. He also was a member of the Eastern Star, Order 84, in Elkton, and a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Cecilton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Catherine Burton, Sarah Carroll, Bertha Manlove and Anna Craig. He is survived by his wife of 58 years and 8 months, Frances Taylor Craig Dixon; two sons, Rockland Leonard Dixon and his wife, Dorothy Dixon of Elkton and Steven Keith Dixon of Phillipsburg, Mo.; a sister, Lucy Rhoades of Cecilton; a brother, H. Joseph Dixon of Earleville; seven grandchildren, Becky Chance, Mark Dixon and Eric Dixon, all of Elkton, Karen Hogan of Deepwater, N.J., Katie Dixon of Phillipsburg, S. Brett Dixon of Conway, Mo., and Travis Dixon of Chestertown; and five great-grandchildren, Andrew Dixon, Brandon Chance, Dylon Williams, Whitney Yerina and Paige Hogan. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 226 E. Main St., Cecilton, where Eastern Star services will be at 7:15 p.m. and Masonic services will be at 8 p.m. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Zion United Methodist Church, Cecilton. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, Cecilton. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Cecil Lodge 125, A.F. & A.M., 308 Biddle St., Chesapeake City, MD 21915.
