Leatrice P. Galloway

Leatrice Perry Galloway, wife of Jennis Roy Galloway of Easton, MD, died from Alzheimer''s Dec. 25 at the William Hill Manor nursing home in Easton, Maryland. She was 83. Born Leatrice Bennett Perry on Feb. 14, 1919, in Bennington, VT, she was the only child of the late Maude Bennett Perry and the late Roy Benton Perry. She grew up in Bennington, and after graduating from Bennington High School, attended the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy, NY. After receiving her nursing degree in 1939, she joined the staff of New York Hospital. In June 1942 she was commissioned a Reserve 2nd. Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps, and was called to active duty the following month when the New York Hospital was activated as the Ninth General Hospital, Army Medical Corps. She received training with the Ninth General Hospital at Fort Devens, MA., and in July 1943 was ordered with the Hospital to Brisbane, Australia for duty in the pacific theater of operations. From August 1943 to April 1945, she served with the Hospital in Australia and at Goodenough Island, Hollandia and Biak Island in New Guinea. From April 1945 to June 1945, she served with the 117th Station Hospital in Palo, Leyte, P.I., and from June 1945 to October 1945 was in charge of the WAC Dispensary at De La Salle College in Manila. She was honorably discharged with the rank of 1st. Lieutenant, at Letterman Hospital, San Francisco, in January 1946. She met her future husband, Army Lieutenant Colonel Jennis Roy Galloway, a Baltimore native, while stationed in Australia. They were married in Brisbane on June 12, 1944. Following the war, they lived stateside briefly before moving in 1947, to Calcutta, India where they lived for the next 16 years. Mrs. Galloway played an active role in the American community of Calcutta, serving several terms as President of the American Women''s Club, and eventually being elected its first Honorary Life Member. After returning to the United States in June 1962, she and her husband lived in Greenwich, CT for 10 years, where Mrs. Galloway was a member of the 2nd. Congregational Church. In 1972, they moved to Bangkok, Thailand, before finally retiring to Wye Mills, MD in 1974. Mrs. Galloway was diagnosed with Alzheimer''s in 1991, and she and her husband moved to William Hill Manor 1995. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Galloway is survived by two daughters; Nancy Lee Galloway of Annapolis, MD and Susan Galloway Abrahams of Fairfield, CT; two sons, Peter Edmunds Galloway of Wilton, CT and Frederick Roy Galloway of Riva, MD, and seven grandchildren. A graveside service followed by interment will be held at the Druid Ridge cemetery in Baltimore, MD on Monday, December 30, 2002 at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer''s Association, 919 N.
