Kenneth Wayne VanSant

He was the second son of the late Edward “Pappy” Walters Van Sant and Daisy Pearl Everett Van Sant, weighing in at 10lb 10oz, on August 2, 1931. He is survived by his wife, Betty Fleetwood Van Sant, and three children, Karen and her spouse, Gene Sigler of Chestertown, Michael Van Sant of Kennedyville; and Dr. Kelly Van Sant and his wife Laura of Centreville/Chestertown. His was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Van Sant. His is also survived by his youngest brother, Ray, and his wife, Sarah Hall of Millington. Ken is a graduate of Millington High School in 1948. He then attended Goldie Beacon College in Wilmington, DE, majoring in business. On March 2, 1951, Ken enlisted in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Ken married his sweetheart Betty Eileen Fleetwood in the Asbury Methodist Church on Thursday, May 17, 1951. They returned to Ft. Bragg the following day. He was then sent by ship to Frankfort, Germany, to join the 5th US Army Corp Communication Unit. Betty soon departed on the USS America for a trans-Atlantic cruise to Germany, to join her new husband. Karen was born in Frankfort in July 1952. Ken’s new family returned to Millington, and he started building their home in July 1953, on a parcel of land next to the homestead where he had grown up. From 1953 to 1960, Ken was foreman of the family Millington Lumber Yard, overseeing daily construction crews, sales, supplies, and daily operations of the Yard. In August 1955, Michael Wayne arrived into their lives. In February 1967, Kelly Fleetwood was born as a welcomed blessing to the family. For many years, Ken worked in the family construction business. In November 1974, Ken and Betty established their custom home construction company, K&B Incorporated, located at River’s Edge Park outside Millington, building homes on the Eastern and Western Shores of Maryland and Delaware. Ken was deeply involved with various committees serving on the W.C. Moffet School in Barclay, MD, as School Board and Building Chairman. He served the Chestertown SDA church as Church Board Chairman, Elder and participated with various building projects. He was very committed in supporting their three children to have Christian education at W.C. Moffett, Eastern Shore Jr. Academy, Highland View Academy, Blue Mountain Academy and Columbia Union College. Ken and his architect, Darrell Rennewanz, were on the Chesapeake Conference of SDA Building Committee from 1966-1968 with meetings held every Sunday. Their building plans were instrumental in designing the two dormitories for Highland View Academy in Hagerstown, MD. The Summer of 1983, Ken contracted an unknown illness. For months he was admitted to multiple hospitals, saw approximately 48 doctors, countless tests, unsuccessful treatments, and received a poor prognosis. His lab work was then sent to the CDC, which identified Lyme disease. Ken was the second confirmed Lyme patient in Maryland. Ken enjoyed the outdoors, carpentry, canoeing, camping, swimming, history, all sports, learning to dance with his 2-left feet, playing pinochle, and enjoying time with Betty, family and friends.
