June Stenger

June Francis Stenger of Chestertown, MD died on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at the Chester River Hospital Center, Chestertown, MD. She was 85. Born in Rock Hall, MD on September 26, 1918, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Agnes Quail Lewis Francis. Mrs. Stenger was a graduate of Rock Hall High School and Saint Agnes Hospital School of Nursing on May, 1942. She worked for Baltimore City Health Department. In May of 1944 she married Carl C. Stenger, Sr. She worked for Kent County Health Department, during which time she and her husband opened Stenger Hardware in 1945. Mrs. Stenger worked as a registered nurse at Kent and Queen Anne''s Hospital, later retiring from Cecil County Health Department. She then worked part time at the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill. Mrs. Stenger was a Charter member of the Rock Hall Yacht Club and a member of the Classic Boat Assoc. She was the First President and the driving force behind the Rock Hall High School Alumni Association, a member of the Kent County Cotillion Club, Kent County Homemakers and the Rock Hall Methodist Young Adult Club. She was a Fifty Year member and past Worthy Matron of the Chestertown Chapter # 86 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member and still active in the Kent County Soroptomist Club. As an active member in local politics, she served as the Chairperson for the Democratic Central Committee. She enjoyed traveling world wide, reading, gardening, boating, and playing Rock Hall poker with a select group of lady gamblers for fifty years. Mrs. Stenger is survived by her three children, Judith Stenger Iseman of Chestertown, MD, Carl C. Stenger and his wife, Pamela of Rock Hall, MD and Quail Louise Stenger Baez and her husband, Kim of Corte Madera, CA; three grandchildren, Jodie Iseman, Carla Stenger and Jesse Stenger; one great grandson, Franklin Leager and an uncle, Naudain Francis of Rock Hall. Services will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD. Relatives and friends may call from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the service. Interment will be held in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Rock Hall, MD. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Rock Hall Alumni Association Scholarship fund, Post Office Box 76, Rock Hall, Maryland, 21661.
