Joyce Wilson Brooks Harris

On Saturday, September 23, 2023, Joyce Wilson (Brooks) Harris, a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, transitioned from this life; she was 86 years old. Joyce was born on February 2, 1937, in Worton, MD, to Anthony and Beulah (Wilson) Brooks. She was the youngest of 8 children. She graduated from Garnett High in 1955 and later married James B. Harris, Jr. Joyce wore many occupational hats during her lifetime, however her passion was making her house a “home”. She was an avid gardener and exceptional cook. She loved to play the guitar and was quite skilled at making decorative wreaths and home-made curtains, which she used to adorn her “home”. Joyce was a member of Union United Methodist Church, in Worton (Coleman), MD, where, on occasion, she served as back-up pianist. She loved the Lord and attended church, faithfully, for many years until she was physically unable to do so. She would often express her desire to be there in-person and the guilt she felt for not being able to do so. However, she was reminded that the Lord doesn’t judge her ability to attend church, in-person; He only judges her heart. Joyce loved having her family visit with her during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. Each year, she bought what probably was the biggest turkey and ham available at the Acme Market, in Chestertown. She looked forward to decorating her Christmas tree, hanging her hand-made wreaths, and enjoyed buying gifts for her grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, father, 7 older siblings (Hilda Settles, William Brooks, Roy Brooks, Marshall Brooks, Donald Brooks, Helen DeShields, and Rendall Brooks), and her husband. She leaves to cherish her memories her children Ron Harris (fiancée Nika Lively), Craig Harris, Sr. (Valerie), Brent Harris (fiancée Doreen Walker), Pier Felton (Benjamin), and Brook Harris (Sheila); 11 grandchildren (Tiffany Harris, Craig Harris, Jr., Tanisha Harris, Kyree Harris, Brent Harris, Jr., Jakyre Harris, Ryan Taylor, Devan Val (Jonathan), David Conway, Brandon Harris, TreDale Harris, Brooke Harris, and Brook Harris, Jr.), 15 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Friday, October 6 at 11:00 am at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. A visitation for family and friends to gather will be held two hours prior, from 9:00 am – 11:00 am at the funeral home. Interment to follow services at Colemans Cemetery in Worton.
