Joyce Arline Goodwin

Joyce Arline Goodwin died December 1, 2018, at The Pines in Easton, MD, with her partner, Carol Lofstedt at her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Maynard and Arline Goodwin, and a niece, Alicia May. Joyce is survived by her loving brother, Russell and his wife Linda Goodwin, from Nanticoke, MD; two nephews, Ryan Goodwin and his wife Adele and their son, Zachary of Berlin and Ricky Goodwin and his wife Andrea and their children, Tristan, Caitlyn, Hailey May, and Ava from Pittsville. Joyce was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1936 and spent most of her life in New York state, where she was educated, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in teaching at Hunter College and her Ph.D. in education at NYU. Joyce dedicated her life to teaching and reaching out to special needs children. She loved middle-school age children and enjoyed sharing the humorous side of teaching, the achievements, antics and accomplishments of her pupils. She taught most of her time in the New York City public school system and retired from the Ardsley Public Schools. While in New York, Joyce attended ballets, plays, movies, operas, and concerts. She loved bird watching, participated in the annual Christmas Day Bird Counts, and became quite gifted in bird banding. She came to school before hours to demonstrate banding to eager young pupils. In addition, Joyce was an avid reader, music lover, and an Oriole and Ravens fan, following their games on TV. A pet lover, Joyce had a number of cats and dogs in her life, her black mini poodle, Freddie, who predeceased her, was most cherished. Joyce and Carol moved to Easton in 2005 to be closer to Joyce’s kinfolk. They built their home in Easton. Some of Joyce’s most happiest hours were spent working in her garden and her unhappiest hours were when she was no longer able to do so. Joyce took up watercolor painting, joined “ASK”, a singles social klub, where she was appointed to the board and served as recording secretary for one term. She was involved in numerous trips, hosted socials in her home, played canasta, and developed some meaningful relationships. She also supported the Talbot County Senior Center in Easton, serving on their advisory board for several years prior to her death. The family and Carol want to thank the many friends and neighbors for their varying acts of thoughtfulness and kindness to Joyce while she lived in Easton, especially the staff at The Pines for their care and accommodations, and to the nursing and rehab personnel from Home Call for their weekly visits. Last but not least, we could not have managed these last nine months without the kindness, love, and gentle hands-on-care of Beverly Lewis, that helped make “Miss Joyce’s” last weeks more comfortable. At her request, Joyce will be cremated and interment will be private. The family of Joyce Goodwin would like to invite you to come and celebrate Joyce’s life and share your memories of her tomorrow, Monday, December 10, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 200 S. Harrison St., Easton, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to educational or animal rescue groups, or volunteering at your local schools or animal shelter would be appreciated.
