John Robert Fountain

John Robert Fountain of Easton died at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton on Wednesday, April 19, 2000. He was 90. Born in Easton on February 26, 1910, in the home on Goldsborough Street where he resided his entire life, he was the son of the late Alexander and Anna Mary Trax Fountain. After graduating from Easton High School in 1926 he attended St. John''s College in Annapolis before graduating from The Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore in 1931. He returned to Easton where he farmed with his brother and during the founding year of the Country School in 1934 was the Head Master. During World War II he served in the European Theatre of Operations in the U.S. Army and was part of the 29th Division and later the 8th Army under General Patton, he participated in battles from Normandy to Belgium. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and among his decorations were the Bronze Star, The Combat Infantryman''s Badge and five Battle Stars. Following his release from active duty he returned to Easton where he worked in the family business before spending the rest of his life active in managing his own private investments. A lifelong resident of Easton he was a member and past Commander of E.E. Streets Memorial Post #5118 VFW, The Talbot Post #70 American Legion and Talbot County Historical Society. He was active in Boy Scouts serving as Scoutmaster of Troop #190. A long time member of Trinity Cathedral, he had served as Senior Warden, Vestryman, Treasurer and had sung in the choir for many years. He received the Bishops Award for service to his church and the Easton Diocese. Mr. Fountain is survived by his brother, James H. Fountain of Easton; two nieces, Margaret F. Spillane of Winter Haven, FL and Nancy Chandonnet of Easton and four nephews, Alexander D. Fountain, Jr. of Oxford, W. Thomas Fountain of Easton, James M. Fountain of Portland, OR and Jeffrey E. Fountain of Gunnison, CO. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2000 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Cathedral, Easton. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton. Friends may call at his home, 117 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD from 5-7 PM on Friday, April 21, 2000.
