John Lawrence Wood Jr.

A Mass of Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated for John Lawrence Wood, Jr. at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Centreville, MD at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 27, 2001. Mr. Wood died at his home on Thursday, August 23, 2001. He was 72. Born on a farm near Centreville on January 6, 1929, he was the son of the late John Lawrence, Sr. and Florence Knott Wood. He graduated from Centreville High School in 1946 and on October 1, 1952 he married Joyce Williams of Worton, MD. Mr. Wood led a very different and interesting life as a farmer. He purchased his first farm, the Keating Farm in 1951 and at the beginning of his farming career he started without any electricity or running water and two mules, Pat and Polly. His business grew over the years to include a logging and lumber business. At the age of 42 he suffered a heart attack. He decided to change his life, embarking on a path to endeavor to gain more education. He received his AA degree from Chesapeake College and later graduated from Salisbury State College with a Batchelor of Science Degree and then received a Juris Doctor Degree in Law from Antioch School of Law in Washington, DC in 1983. While in school in Washington, DC he became a certified private pilot. He flew back and forth from his home to school in Washington, DC. He was a member of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, the Flying Farmers, past member of Queen Anne Lions Club, past member of Queen Anne’s County Farm Bureau, a member of the Norwich Tax Ditch Association and a past District Court Commissioner in Centreville. In addition to his wife, Mr. Wood is survived by two sons, John Lawrence Wood, III of Queen Anne and William Victor Wood of Centreville; two sisters, Dolores Wood Fountain of Denton and Alice Wood Uhler of Baltimore; two brothers, Robert L. Wood of Dover, DE and David Rodney Wood of Denton; two granddaughters, Victoria C. Wood and Joyce F. Wood, both of Centreville. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Donald F. Wood who died in 1992. Family and friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville on Sunday, August 26 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Chesterfield Cemetery, Centreville, MD.
