John L. Fryling

John L. Fryling, 78, of Easton, died on February 4, 2011 after a courageous twelve and a half year struggle with multiple myeloma. Mr. Fryling was born August 20, 1932 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of the late Rev. John J. Fryling and Effie Bielema Fryling. While in elementary school the family moved to Newark, NY. In 1950, Mr. Fryling graduated from Newark High School. He then continued his education at Cornell University and in 1955 received his degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation from Cornell, Mr. Fryling served for two years in the U.S. Army assigned at the White Sands Missile Range in White Sands, NM. Following his military service, he worked for several years at Gulton Industries in Plainfield, NJ and then became a founding partner in Gans-Fryling, Inc. in Arlington, VA. In the late 1970s, Mr. Fryling started his own company, Fryling Technical Services, Inc., which he operated until last year, specializing in underwater electrical equipment. Mr. Fryling married Charlotte Meyer on October 2, 1978 and they were long time residents of Arlington, Virginia and Easton. They enjoyed skiing together and each winter, in the early years of their marriage, traveled to Colorado, Utah and California to spend time on the great ski slopes in the West. An avid sailor, he and Charlotte spent many days under sail on the Chesapeake Bay until his illness prevented them from sailing. During one nine month period, they sailed to the Islands of the Bahamas and the length of the Atlantic Coast. Mr. Fryling kept his 1962 Hinckley Bermuda-40 yowl, Wolverine, at his pier on Peach Blossom Creek near Oxford. He was a past president of the Bermuda 40 Association, and a member of numerous professional organizations. In addition to his wife, Charlotte Meyer Fryling of Easton, Mr. Fryling is survived by his two sisters, Jocelyn Fryling Bussies of Jenison, MI and Mary Fryling White of Arlington, VA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. A private interment service will be held at the Oxford Cemetery with his brother in-law, Rear Admiral David E. White, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy Retired, officiating. Later this spring, at a date to be determined, a Service of Remembrance will be held at the Fryling residence.
