John "Jack" Edward Flanagan, Jr.

John E. Flanagan, Jr. (Jack), 80, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died on May 12 at the Talbot House Hospice, in Easton. Mr. Flanagan was born on June 12, 1928 in Baltimore to the late John E. Flanagan Sr. and Mary Grace Spurrier Flanagan. He grew up in South Baltimore’s Lakeland neighborhood, attended Baltimore City’s Southern High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1948. After serving in the Korean War as a communications technician, he was honorably discharged in 1952 as a staff sergeant. Soon afterwards, he married Eleanor T. Rose on September 12, 1953 in Baltimore. While working at Miller Metals Inc., he continued his education and received a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Baltimore in 1962. In 1964, he continued his professional career with Westinghouse’s Electronic Systems business in production and financial management, working at facilities located in Lansdowne, Linthicum and Annapolis for over 29 years. While employed at Westinghouse, he received a Masters degree from Morgan State University in 1974. Mr. Flanagan lived in Easton and North Ft. Myers, FL while previously residing for a number of years in Grasonville, Annapolis and Linthicum. He especially loved traveling and attending Baltimore Colts football games. He also enjoyed playing tennis, baseball, coaching youth sports and golf. A gifted amateur golfer with a deft short game, Jack made five hole-in-ones during his lifetime. He was the 2002 Matchplay Club Champion and the 2003 Runner-Up medalist at Lake Fairways Golf Club in Florida. He was a long-time member of golf teams and leagues at Westinghouse, Prospect Bay CC, The Easton Club and Lake Fairways GC. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor and three children: John (Jack) Flanagan, III (Barb) of Severna Park; Susan F. Scholl (Christopher) of West Chester, PA; and Jill F. Madsen (Christian) of Annapolis; and eight grandchildren including Colleen & Kelly Flanagan; Evan & Madeline Scholl; and Ella, Owen, Aidan & Dane Madsen. Mr. Flanagan is also survived by two sisters; Peggy Wedel (John), of Ft. Myers, FL and Janice Hoddinott (James) of Littlestown, PA and a brother Carl Geng of Baltimore, MD. He was predeceased by a sister Mary Grace Gardener Sturdevant (Pierce).
