John "Jack" McMullan

John “Jack” M. McMullan of Chestertown, MD, died Friday, December 16, 2005 at his home in Chestertown, MD. He was 95. John McMullan was born April 20, 1910 in Nitshill, Scotland, the son of the late, Patrick and Rose Lynch McMullan. A year later, the McMullan family immigrated to Canada, living near Montreal until 1919 when they sailed to Ireland aboard the ship "Grampion" which famously struck an iceberg en route. Their stay in Ireland was brief, however, and they returned to Canada within one year. Finally while in his teens, Mr. McMullan and his family made a move to the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New York. As a young man, Mr. McMullan won a scholarship to the St. Regis High School and then attended the City College of New York. Mr. McMullan went to work in New York for Mackay Radio and Telegraph which later became known as ITT World Communications. He spent fifty years there, starting as an office boy, working as a telegraph operator during WWII but spent the majority of his career as the pension fund administrator. Mr. McMullan was Secretary of the ITT Quarter Century Club for 25 years and was a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He retired to Jupiter, FL in 1989, then again moved to Chestertown in 2001 to be nearer family. He loved singing, ice skating and playing the piano. He also dabbled in art and painting and helped build homes for many members of his family. He was known as “Jack of all Trades.” Mr. McMullan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice McMullan of Chestertown, MD; one daughter, Alice Marie Barron and husband Bill of Worton, MD; one son, Bill McMullan and wife, Mary of South Riding, VA; one sister, Mary McDonald of Floral Park, NY; one brother, James McMullan of Whiting, NJ; four grandchildren, Robert Barron of St. Maarten, NA, Sally Cavanaugh and husband, John of Columbia, MD, Billy McMullan and wife, Meghan of South Riding, VA, Tara Barton and husband, Jerry of South Riding, VA; dearly loved by eight great grandchildren, Abby, Kelly, Liam, Eileen, Kevin, Shaelyn, Bridget, and Leah and sorely missed by many nieces and nephews Visitations will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Rd, Chestertown, MD, on Monday, December 19 from 6-8 p.m., and Tuesday, December 20, 2005 from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m. A Catholic Mass celebrating his life will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chestertown. Interment will be held in Chester Cemetery following the Mass.
