John Henry Jacobs

John Henry Jacobs of Easton, MD died on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was 82. Born December 3, 1921 in Boldixum/Fohr, Germany, he was the son of the late Simon A. and Nora C. Dethlefs Jacobs. After graduating from Dickinson High School in 1942, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, during which time he received many ribbons and citations. Following his release from active duty in 1945, he returned to Jersey City, NJ where he remained until moving to Easton in 1989. A life member of the National Geographic Society, he was also a member of the Smithsonian Institution, the Chesapeake Maritime Museum and the Foehrer and Amrumer Verein. Mr. Jacobs was widely read, had traveled extensively and knew something about everything. He was a keen observer of the world around him and never lost interest, enthusiasm or appreciation of all he observed. He loved children and animals and loved to feed the birds and squirrels wherever he happened to be. In years past, one of his many joys was camping along the Delaware River with his brothers and his old friend, Hank Ricklefs. In more recent years, he enjoyed watching herons and osprey along the Tred Avon River and traveling to Wyoming in the fall. He especially loved cross-country drives and would have stopped at every historical marker along the way had he been driving himself. He had a god sense of humor and thought his life was wonderful even in the face of his ultimately fatal accident. A wonderful, generous, caring man, who was deeply loved, Mr. Jacobs is survived by a brother, Oluf D. Jacobs of Easton, MD; a sister, Eliese Joost of Nashua, NH; and twelve nieces and nephews, Robert Jacobs of Wykoff, NJ, Ronnie Joost of Maplewood, NJ, Cathy Lovas of Nashua, NH, Judith Fauntleroy of Easton, MD, Ellen Cisco of Wellington, FL, Erich Jacobs of Palo Alto, CA, Christina Brenner of Coatsville, PA, Marianne Jacobs of Pompton Lakes NJ, Pamela McDermott of Jersey City, NJ, Tina Flohr of Wilmington, NC, Karen O’Boyle of Lake Hoptacong, NJ and Barbara Guevera of Henrietta, OK. Three brothers, Simon Jacobs, Harry Jacobs, and Peter Jacobs are deceased. Services will be private.
