John Spencer Lucas

A wonderful loving husband, father, brother, uncle and nephew left us this week. John was unique, free spirited, and, being a drummer, he naturally walked to the beat of his own drum. He loved music and could give a history lesson on any song. John loved the Rolling Stones and played in a band. John was the son of late Erdman and Marie Lucas and he grew up in Church Hill, MD, where his aunts, uncles, and cousins played a large part in his life, the typical small town America lifestyle where everyone in town helped raise your children. He was one of those kids. Many of his childhood friends are still friends today, and enjoyed their times together. John was a professional printer and spent most of his career working for Whitmore Print & Imaging Co. where co workers became his second family. He finished his career at Corporate Press. John was a Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed playing softball, baseball, football, bowling and golf. He was a natural baseball player and enjoyed coaching his son in sports. John was on a mission to visit every major league baseball park and football stadium and had covered many until his death. John adored his children and talked, text, sang to and laughed with them daily. He leaves behind his wife and best friend Nora; his son & his “Bud,” Brian; his daughter; and, his partner in crime Tara; his grandson, Zach; his brother and comrade, Steve; and, last but not least, his defender and sister, Sara. There is much more to all this love, and they include his brother-in-laws Mike, Dan and Donnie; sister-in-laws Sandy and Lena; nieces, Ginni, Kim, April, Amy and Tina; nephews Mike, Justin, and Bill; his wonderful aunts, Francis Lucas and Virginia Mae Lane; his great-nieces; great-nephews; cousins; a special “daughter,” Shelly Starkey; and godson, Will Morris. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at 7pm on Friday December 13, 2013, in the Retreat Center at Camp Pecometh, near Church Hill, MD. Friends and family may call at the center after 5pm. The family requests that you wear your favorite sports attire for this special evening. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution in his memory to the John S. Lucas Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund, 215 Concord Rd. Chestertown, MD 21620.
