John "Johnny" Alexander Haddaway Jr.

John Alexander “Johnny” Haddaway, Jr., devoted 3rd generation watermen, lifelong steward of the Chesapeake Bay and cherished member of Tilghman Island, passed away at home on August 15, 2025. He was 88. Born on November 17th, 1936, in Tilghman, Johnny was drawn to the water at a young age. For over 70 years, Johnny captained his boat, Lorna B, later christened, Bay Hunter, with pride until he retired in late 2022. He spent his life working the tides, rising before dawn to harvest the bounty of the bay – oysters, crabs and fish. In February of 1956, he married the former Alice Ann Lowery to whom he was married to for 50 years before her passing in November of 2006. Together, Johnny and Alice Ann were the heart of our family. One of Johnny’s greatest roles was that of a father and grandfather to his grandchildren and the bond they shared was a testament to the capacity of a grandfather’s love. In 2023, Johnny was recognized for his years of lifetime achievements and dedication to the water, receiving multiple awards from the Maryland General Assembly, as well as, a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition. Through all these years, Johnny was known for his hard work, quiet strength, and deep knowledge of the water. He was a fixture on the docks and a mentor to many young watermen. In the last few years, time with his family, daily morning trips to Fairbank Tackle and porch sitting, watching the boats come through the Knarrow’s were a few of the things he looked forward to everyday. Johnny is survived by his son, John “Todd” Haddaway and wife Marie, of Denton; his grandchildren whom saw him more than a grandfather, but as a father, John “Hunter” Haddaway and wife Renah, of Tilghman, and Haylee Robinson, and husband Allen, of Federalsburg; great grandchildren, Bentley Haddaway, Hunter Robinson, Autumn Robinson, Hayden Robinson and Allyson Robinson; former daughter in law, Patricia Haddaway; siblings Christine Schutt and Sallie Bowman; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Along with his beloved Alice Ann, Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, John Alexander Haddaway, Sr. and Nannie Belle Newnam Haddaway, his daughter, Lorna Beth Haddaway, and his siblings, Georgie, Shirley, Nanette, Suzanne and Florence. Tilghman Island bids farewell to a waterman whose life ebbed and flowed with the tides, whom is now carried to calmer seas. The Island won’t be the same without him, but he will forever remain in our hearts. In following Johnny’s wishes, his services will be private.
