John Taylor Harrison

John T. (Jack) Harrison passed away peacefully January 1, 2016, in Williamsburg, VA. A longtime resident of Easton, MD, Jack was 94 at the time of his death. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Lewis H. Curd and their two children, Kendall Taylor Curd and Katherine Eleanor Curd. He is also survived by his brother, George H. Harrison and his wife Kay; his niece and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Vincent Perotta; and nephew, George A. Harrison. He was a widower at the time of his passing. His first wife, Doris M. Harrison, died after 40 years of marriage and was the mother of Jack’s only child, Patricia. A brief second marriage to Libby Horne ended in divorce. He and his third wife, Patricia Harrison, were married in 1987 and remained together until her death in 2010. Jack was born on Tilghman Island and spent his early years there with his father and mother George T. and Rosella Harrison. He graduated from Tilghman Elementary and High School and subsequently from the University of Maryland. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army directly out of college and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant by the end of the war. He served in the Pacific theatre and was part of the military government instituted in Korea directly following the defeat of Japan. After the war, Jack returned to work with his father George at the Tilghman Packing Co. In 1956, he started his own business, J.T. Harrison & Associates Canned Food Brokers in Easton. After a successful run working independently, he sold his business to A.W. Sisk & Son of Preston and worked for them until he retired at age 60. Jack was very active in civic affairs and served on the Talbot County Board of Education during the 1960’s. In his capacity as chairman of the school board, he was part of the founding Board of Trustees of Chesapeake College and retained a lifelong interest in the promotion and success of the College. Chesapeake’s John T. Harrison Award is named for him. He belonged to a number of fraternal organizations, the Lions, Elks, and his college fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa. Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 200 S. Harrison St. in Easton on Friday, January 8, 2016, from 6-8 pm. A graveside service will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
