Joan Rockwood Jayne

Joan Rockwood Jayne died on Monday, June 13, 2016, at Bayleigh Chase in Easton, ME. She was 85. Born on February 12, 1931, in Stamford, CT, she was the daughter of the late Horace S. Rockwood and Elise Reyneer Rockwood. Joan graduated from Elmira College, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, which she paid for by working as the head waitress in the college dining hall and as a waitress at the Yardarm Beach Club in Westhampton, NY, during the summer. While in Westhampton, she met her husband to be, Gordon Jayne, who was attending the U.S. Naval Academy. They began their 54 year marriage soon after graduation. They raised three children together and moved around the country for Gordon’s career in the Navy. They moved to Annapolis in 1972, where they stayed until moving to Easton in 2010. Joan had a passion for words, language and reading, becoming a proofreader for the Maryland General Assembly in the 1970’s. Joan also loved annual trips to St. Martin Island in the Caribbean and many annual family beach weeks in Delaware. She enjoyed putting on family dinners at home, where she thought it made perfect sense to have three birthday cakes served after one meal, one for each person celebrating! Joan moved to William Hill Manor in 2010 and enjoyed friendships with other residents and the wonderful staff. In 2015, she moved to The Gardens Assisted Living and experienced exceptional companionship and friendship there. Joan is survived by a son, Peter S. Jayne and his wife Gayle of Ingleside, MD; a sister, Betty R. Martin of Danbury, CT; a daughter-in-law, Brenda L. Jayne of Dayton, MD; grandchildren, Rebecca L. Jayne and her husband, Nicholas P. Deifel of Farmville, VA, Brian M. Jayne of Columbia, MD, Griffin O. Jayne of College Park, MD, and Allyson E. Jayne of Dayton, MD; and a great-grandchild, Maxwell H. Deifel of Farmvile, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon H. Jayne; daughter, Cynthia E. Jayne; son, Gordon P. Jayne; and brother, Horace S. Rockwood. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 2 p.m., at the Taylor Auditorium of Bayleigh Chase, 501 Dutchman’s Lane, Easton, MD.
