Jennis Roy Galloway

Jennis Roy Galloway, a longtime resident of Easton, MD, died of cancer May 1, 2009 at the Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood,MD. He was 94. He was born on September 12, 1914, in Baltimore, MD to Nina Roy and Jennis Edmunds Galloway. After graduating from Forest Park High School, he attended the Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He was hired by the National Carbon Company, a division of the Union Carbide Corporation, and was posted as Plant Engineer to the Eveready Battery plant in Batavia, Java, Dutch East Indies. In December 1941, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was attached to the Dutch General Headquarters in Bandoeng, Java, as a liaison officer. In March 1942, he evacuated to Australia, where he was temporarily attached to the Australian Army Southern Command in Melbourne. After attending a six week course at the Australian School for Military Intelligence, he was assigned as the Base Intelligence Officer at U.S. Army Headquarters, Port Moresby, Papua, New Guinea. Later he became responsible for setting up the counterintelligence network for all of New Guinea. He served 16 months in New Guinea, followed by duty in Australia, the Philippines and Japan, where he was Theater Commander of the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps. under General Douglas MacArthur. While stationed in Australia, he met his future wife, Lieutenant Leatrice Bennett Perry, of Bennington, VT, an Army nurse serving in the Pacific Theater. They were married in Brisbane, Australia, on June 12, 1944, after a whirlwind romance. He returned to the United States in November, 1945, having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and was honorably discharged from the Army on March 5, 1946. During his service in the Army, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Medal with 5 battle stars, and two Unit Citations with Oak Leaf Clusters. He rejoined the National Carbon Company immediately following his separation from the army, and he and his wife lived briefly in Cleveland, OH, before moving in 1947 to Calcutta, India. His initial assignment was as plant engineer at the National Carbon Company’s Camperdown Works, manufacturing Eveready batteries. He and his wife lived in Calcutta a total of 16 years, raising four children along the way. He rose to the position of Managing Director, Union Carbide India, Ltd. before being transferred to the New York office of Union Carbide as Vice President of its International Division. Upon returning to the United States in June, 1962, he and his wife lived in Greenwich, CT, for 10 years. In 1972 he retired as Vice-Chairman of Union Carbide Eastern, Inc., where he had been responsible for all UCC Operations in the Far East. Immediately upon retirement, UCC offered him a temporary job in Thailand, managing a joint Union Carbide/Dutch Shell tin mining and smelting venture. He and his wife lived in Bangkok for 2 years, before finally returning to live in Wye Mills, MD, in 1974. In 1991 his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimers,and in 1995 he and his wife moved to the William Hill Manor in Easton, MD, a continuing care retirement community. Mrs. Galloway died December 25, 2002. Mr. Galloway is survived by two daughters, Nancy Lee Galloway of Annapolis, MD, and Susan Galloway Abrahams of Fairfield, CT; two sons, Peter Edmunds Galloway of Wilton, CT, and Frederick Roy Galloway of Riva, MD and seven grandchildren. A graveside service followed by interment will be held at the Druid Ridge Cemetery, 7900 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD, on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 12:00 pm.
