Jean Gill Smith

Jean Gill Smith, wife of Edward G. Smith, passed away in her sleep, at home, on Tuesday morning, February 14, 2012. She was born on March 18, 1926, in Chestertown, MD, the daughter of the late, Charles Lee Gill, Jr. and Mable Coppage Gill. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John Lee Gill, in 2011 and Thomas Hepburn Gill in 1989. Survivors include her husband, Edward G. Smith, with whom she celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on Saturday, February 11, 2012; a son, Douglas G. Smith and his wife, Maria Falco Smith; a daughter, Jennifer Smith Ommert and her husband, Randy C. Ommert; grandchildren, Rhiannon Madden Simpler, Caitlin Esther Madden, Douglas Joseph Smith; devoted step-grandchildren; and numerous other nephews and nieces and other dear friends considered to be their children. She attended Chestertown elementary and high school, Washington College, and Goldey-Beacom College. She had continued to attend Chestertown High School, Class of 1944, luncheons every month in Chestertown with her surviving classmates. She worked in the family business, Gill Bros., in Chestertown. She and her husband, Ed Smith, married on February 11, 1950, and enjoyed a long and fascinating life for the next 62 years. She was a Navy wife, located in San Diego, CA, until 1953; a homemaker, partner, and mother from 1953 to 2012. She was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Church Hill, MD; American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, USS Sicily CVE 118 and Escort Carriers Associations Auxiliaries, Kent Island Yacht Club Auxiliary, Vice President and Secretary of Smith Oil Co., SOCO, Inc. and former member and devout golfer of Carlisle, PA, Country Club. She considered that her greatest achievement in life was to have a wonderful circle of family and friends. While her mischievous sense of humor will be missed, her capacity for love will be missed most of all. A Memorial Service will be held in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Church Hill, MD, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Jean’s family looks forward to you joining with them to celebrate her life. A reception will be held the following day, Sunday, February 19, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the VFW Post 7464 Home in Grasonville, MD. All of Jean’s friends and family are invited to celebrate her wonderful long and loving life. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made in her memory to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Church Lane, Church Hill, MD 21623; to the American Heart Association; or to a charity of your choice.
