Jane Carroll Dillon

Jane Carroll Dillon, 89, a resident of Stevensville, MD, for over 20 years, passed away May 22, 2014, after fighting cancer for nearly two decades. She was born April 18, 1925, in Washington, DC, to the late Bernadine J. and John L. Carroll. She was the third of their seven children. She graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Washington, DC, where she was May Queen in 1942. Upon graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Priory School, (now the St. Anselm’s Abbey School), the B&O Railroad and the U.S. Senate. She married Bernard V. Dillon on July 7, 1945, after he returned from serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy CB’s. While raising the family, she worked at home for his small business, Dillon Co. Waterproofing, as secretary and scheduler. They built two homes themselves, one in Mayo and the other on Kent Island. She was a hands-on partner in both projects. She dug the footing for their Kent Island home by hand. While in Mayo, she drove an Anne Arundel County school bus for handicapped children. Mrs. Dillon was a member and volunteer at the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose and the Elks. While able, she attended Catholic Mass each morning, followed by an hour long swim. In addition to enjoying swimming, she liked to gamble. Slot machines and football pools were her favorites. She is survived by nine children; Timothy P. Dillon (Marie); Thomas V. Dillon (Susan Fitzgerald); Carroll Marie Dethrow (John); Doris Ann Dillon; Theresa Jane Koper (George); Barbara Mary Bryant (Edward); Shelia Anne Westrem; Matthew Xavier Dillon and Mark A. Dillon. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband of 51 years, Vincent, passed away in 1996, and she was predeceased by her granddaughter Joanna Marie Bryant. The family will receive friends at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD, from 6 to 8 on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, 1861 Harbor Drive, Chester, MD, on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at 11:00am with burial to follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, MD.
