James M. Smith

James M. "Jimmy" Smith of Ocala, FL, formerly of Queen Anne's County, died on Sunday, November 12, 2006 in Ocala, FL. He was 62. Born April 8, 1944, in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Irene Smith Saffell and the late James D. Smith and stepson of Elmer Saffell. Jimmy loved life. Throughout his younger years, he lived to play baseball and soccer. He attended Stevensville High School, where he was on the baseball and soccer teams. He loved the beach and swimming. In his retirement years, he found the game of golf and that became his passion. He was on the local golf league in his community and could always be seen riding around in his golf cart with his Capt. Jim tags. He worked most of his life as a waterman, crabbing and clamming, where the nickname of "Lightning" became his trademark. The last 10 years before retirement, he was employed by Harris Crab House in Grasonville. He enjoyed the last two years of his life, the most when he and his loving companion, Betty Churn, retired to Summerfield, FL, where they built a home and made many wonderful memories together. Jimmy is survived by his loving mother, Irene Smith Saffell of Cape Coral, FL; a stepfather, Elmer Saffell of Cape Coral, FL; the love of his life, Betty Churn of Summerfield, FL; three beautiful daughters, Marsha Clough of Cordova, Teresa Rhodes of Centreville, and Carrie Marquardt of Waldorf; a loving sister, Diane Ruth of Centreville; a loving brother, Ronald Smith of Wye Mills; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a grandfather, John Palmatary of Centreville; and numerous family members who all loved him very much. Jimmy will be missed by all his loving friends and family, but he will always be close in our hearts. He was preceded in death by his father, James D. Smith, who died in 1980. A memorial service was held in Summerfield, FL. A local service will be held on December 1, 2006, at 6 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Centreville, MD, with visitation from 5 - 6 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, P.O.
