Jacqueline Roudiez

Jacqueline Strich Roudiez of Stevensville, MD, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at her residence. She was 81. Born on August 10, 1922, in Paris, France, she was the only child of the late, George Strich and Cecile Felicier. Jacqueline was raised in Paris two blocks from Notre Dame where her parents owned an antique and upholstery shop. She spent a short time in England as a nanny, but returned to Paris during the war helping out her parents as an excellent seamstress by making traditional silk lampshades and upholstery. Jacqueline met Captain Leon Samuel Roudiez of the U. S. Army while he was serving in Paris during WWII. Their wedding was the first performed in Notre Dame Cathedral after the liberation of Paris. Jacqueline arrived on the first War Bride ship to the United States after WWII and settled in with Capt. Roudiez’ family in Long Island, NY, where she began raising her own family. Moving from there to Shanksville, NY, in Army barracks while her husband first taught at Columbia University in NY, then to State College, PA, when Professor Roudiez taught at Penn State for 10 years, she would be remembered for having entertained many colleagues, friends, visiting artists and musicians. Renowned for her excellent cooking, she continued entertaining in Closter, NJ, where they settled for 30 years while Professor Roudiez taught at Columbia University Graduate School. She also did charity work associated with Columbia University in NYC. Jacqueline had an exquisite eye for arts and antiques, and enjoyed jewelry making as a hobby. She also enjoyed giving private French lessons to young children and tutoring older students in PA and NJ. In 1998, they moved from northern New Jersey to Stevensville, MD. In addition to her devoted husband, Leon Samuel Roudiez, she is survived by one son, Francis H. Roudiez of Stevensville, MD; a daughter, Genevieve Roudiez of Nantucket, MA; five grandchildren, Nicole Roudiez, Justin Roudiez and Christopher Roudiez, all of Stevensville, MD, Sean McSheehy and Ruth Roudiez, both of Nantucket, MA. The family will receive friends and relatives at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., Chester, MD on May 20, 2004 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department, Ambulance Operation Division, P.O.
