Irene E. Drummer

Irene Evans Drummer, 87 of Preston, MD, passed away on March 29, 2011. Born in Baltimore on December 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Marion E. and Joseph W. A. Evans. Mrs. Drummer graduated from Stevensville High School in 1940. She was captain of her softball team and received many first place medals in track and field. She graduated from the Strayer Business College in Philadelphia, PA. After graduation, she was employed by the State of Maryland working in the office of the late Governor J. Millard Tawes in Annapolis, MD. Mrs. Drummer and her family moved to Bethlehem in 1972 where she enjoyed gardening, serving as past president of the Caroline Ladies and Gardening Club. She also enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Irvin O. Drummer, Sr., visiting Vienna, Austria, Paris, France, the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Thomas and St. Croix, the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Hawaiian Islands, Canada, Nova Scotia, and the East Coast of the United States. Mrs. Drummer was a member of the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Grasonville, MD, also serving as past Secretary and Treasurer. During that time there were two Methodist Churches in town that were combined into one congregation moving into a much larger church, beautifully built by her late husband, Irvin O. Drummer, Sr. She is survived by five children, Marion Drummer, Susan Gannon and her husband, David, Cynthia Mason and her husband Jack, Irvin O.”Skip” Drummer, Jr. and his wife Catherine, J. Eric Drummer and his wife Ruth; 13 grandchildren, David Stringer, Thomas Barrett “Bart” Stringer, JoAnn Stringer and her partner Susan Starkey, Henry F. Stringer, Jr., Rachel Gannon, Martha Patchett and her husband Leonard, Sarah Gannon, Brandon Mason, Joshua Mason, Irvin O. “Trey” Drummer, III, and his wife Yvonne, Jason Drummer, Jonathan Drummer and Kristen Wood; eight great-grandchildren, Sadie Newhall and her husband, Graham, Taylor Guerrero, Ryan Stringer, Abby Patchett, Zaviun Taylor, Samantha Drummer, Logan Drummer, and London Wood; and one great-great-grandchild, Jameson Newhall. In additional to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin O. Drummer, Sr.; sister, Josephine Evans; and great-grandson, Connor Patchett. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2011, at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville, MD, where friends may call on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Morgantown Hospice (P.O. Box 4222, Morgantown, WV 26505) who so tenderly assisted Mrs. Drummer and her family during her illness.
