Howard Johnson

Howard Samuel Johnson of Crumpton, Maryland died on Sunday, March 30, 2002 at Kent and Queen Anne’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was 76. Born on December 29, 1926 in Barclay, Maryland, he was the son of the late Harry and Edra Johnson, his biological parents and the late Tom and Estha McGinnis, his adopted parents. Mr. Johnson was a lifetime resident of Queen Anne’ County. A self made man, he began work at the young age of ten assisting his family after the depression. At age twelve he went to work for Tom and Estha McGinnis at their family farm and market produce stand/ store until it closed. He served with the US Navy during WWII on the Charles S. Sperry Destroyer 697 as a plank owner and was honorably discharged. He returned to Crumpton, Md. and made his home with the McGinnis family. Mr. Johnson took over a small restaurant in Crumpton, MD, previously owned by Art Hock on 4th Street. In the winter months he worked at Latex in Dover, DE and A&P grocery store in Chestertown, MD. Mr. Johnson drove a school bus for Lloyd Gale for 41 years, later turning the route over to his wife. He was the superintendent of the Crumpton Cemetery and took great pride keeping it looking nice. He also managed the Crumpton Mobile Station until it was turned over to his son. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Crumpton Methodist Church and the Centreville Masonic Lodge #180 AF & AM, a 32nd degree Mason, he belonged to Boumi Temple and Shriners. He was Past Patron of Centreville Chapter #69 Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Frank Johnson, Johnny Johnson, and Thomas Sparks all of Crumpton, MD. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Louise Meekins Johnson, whom he married on December 10, 1952; a son, Howard Austin Johnson and his wife, Barbara of Crumpton, MD; a daughter, Lydia Legg Singh and her husband, Goldie of Crumpton, MD; a sister, Betty Moore of Crumpton, MD; three grandchildren, Tabitha Legg McGinnis, Hunter Johnson and Chris Price, and two great grandchildren, Kamryn Johnson, and Eric Price, also survived by several half-sister,a half-brother and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends may call on Thursday, April 3, 2003 from 7 PM until 9 PM at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A.,130 Speer Road, Chestertown, MD where a Masonic and Eastern Star service will be held at 7:45 PM. Funeral Services will be on Friday, April 4, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Crumpton Cemetery, Crumpton, MD. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center of the Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital, 100 Brown Street, Chestertown, MD 21620.
