Howard Thomas Cook Sr.

Howard Thomas Cook, Sr., of Centreville, MD, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 91. He was born on March 27, 1931, in a farmhouse on Whitemarsh Road, the farm originally known as the “Merrick Farm” in Centreville. He was the son of the late William H. Cook and Louise Covington Cook. Howard graduated from Centreville High School, Class of 1949. He was a farmer all his life. Howard loved the outdoors and farm life, along with his passion for hunting. He loved deer, waterfowl, and especially rabbit hunting and running his beagles. He made many lifelong friends while hunting across the state. He most enjoyed going grouse hunting in Western Maryland. He was an excellent athlete in his youth and as a young man, especially in soccer and baseball. He was always proud of being a team member of the Centreville High School soccer team, which won three straight state championships titles. No high school in this county to date has accomplished that feat. He was a gifted baseball and softball player as well as coaching men’s softball teams. He was also a coach of American Legion Post 18 Baseball. Howard was also honored by being inducted into the Maryland State Modified Softball Hall of Fame in 1996. Howard loved his cold beers, steamed crabs, and rare steak. He never missed his annual “muskrat” feast, hosted by his friend, Jeff Walbert. Lastly, he loved his family. He was a proud, honest, and "to the point" kind of guy If you were his friend, you had a friend for life. Howard is survived by his daughter, Susan C. Wolff (Bob) of Centreville; his daughter-in-law, Laura Nan Cook of Centreville; his twin brother, Edwin Cook, Sr., of Centreville; his six grandchildren, Jake Cook (Shaena), Julia Clough (Adam), Tyler Wolff, Joey Wolff (Renee), Scott Wolff (Rachel), and Chris Wolff; seven great-grandchildren, Tripp, Hayes and Emersyn Cook, Nash and Olivia Clough, and soon to be another little Clough; and Luke and Leah Wolff. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Lorraine Callaway Cook, in 2017; his son, Tommy Cook in 2021; and his brother, Bill Cook in 2002. A visitation has been scheduled on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and funeral services will follow at 12 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Centreville.
