Herman Miller Orrell III

Lt. Col Herman Miller”Dick” Orrell, III, USA, Ret., died at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, on Thursday, September 5, 2013. He was 83. Born in Easton, December 10, 1929, he was the son of the late, Herman M., Jr. and Ruth Stewart Orrell. After graduating from Centreville High School in 1946, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he received his B. S. Degree in Agricultural Economics in 1950. In August of 1951, he joined the U. S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, retiring in September of 1971 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. During his career, he was primarily engaged in aviation and air safety. Among his many decorations are the Master Aviation Badge, the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the Air Medal w/4 Oak Leaf Clusters. After his release from active duty, he worked as a Civil Servant with the Dept. of Navy and, later, the Dept. of Army, retiring again in the 1990’s. Following this retirement, he returned to Wye Mills where he served as President of the family business, Orrell’s Maryland Beaten Biscuits. A member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Centreville Rotary Club and the V.F.W. Post 5118 in Easton. He was also a life member of the Army Aviation Association. Devoted to his family and pets, particularly his dog, Maggie, Dick enjoyed golf, fishing, cards and traveling both in the U. S. and worldwide. Surviving, are his wife, the former Margaret Tull whom he married in 1951; two daughters, Bonnie O. Reichert of Liberty Hill, TX, and Betsy A. Skinner of Chestertown; a son, Phillip S. Orrell of Easton; eight grandchildren, Christopher and Aimee Reichert, Jason and Brandon Orrell and Matthew, Laura, Andrew and Rebekah Skinner and five great grandchildren, Colby and Olivia Orrell and Graham, Evelyn and Desmond Reichert. Dick had enjoyed taking most of his grandchildren on special trips either in this country or abroad. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 9, at 2 p.m. at the Oxford United Methodist Church in Oxford where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Memorial donations, in Dick’s memory, may be made to the Talbot Senior Center, 400 Brookletts Avenue, Easton, MD 21601.
