Henry Larry Milburn

Henry Larry Milburn, 89, of Queenstown, Maryland passed peacefully to the heavens on 10 June 2025, to be rejoined with his beloved wife Mary Ann (Ihnatko) Milburn. Larry was raised in Irwin, Pennsylvania on Fairview Avenue surrounded by cousins, aunts, uncles and beloved grandparents. Larry was an avid reader, devouring books, especially History. His love of sports began early as manager of Irwin High School’s basketball team, Pennsylvania State Champions 1953 and ’54. During his High School years Larry made friends for life with teammates and coaches- often gathering later in his life to share draft beers and stories at the Larimar Fire Hall. Larry attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon) graduating with an Industrial Engineering degree on an ROTC Scholarship. It was during this time Larry met his beloved Mary Ann. They married after graduation, just before Larry entered Army basic officer training. Larry was immensely proud of his Army service, stationed at Fort Belvoir, West Point, and Fort Bragg. After completion of duty, he went to work for the West Penn Power Company as an applications engineer. He made many dear friends over his 38-year career, serving in a variety of positions throughout the operating area. While working in State College, Pennsylvania, he and Mary Ann became Nittany Lions season ticket holders, enjoying tailgate parties and friendships. They continued attending Penn State games for years, even after relocating back to Irwin. As his sons grew older, Larry began his dual sport NCAA coaching career (Norwin Community Athletic Association that is), coaching youth teams in both basketball and baseball. He enjoyed supporting Norwin Basketball, attending every game he could. He was a Steelers fan with season tickets after attending the Immaculate Reception playoff game and not missing a game for decades. An avid golfer, he played with friends several times a week well into his 80’s. Family summer vacations were always trips to the Outer Banks, often with close friends, and always dreaming of retirement. They eventually discovered the area of Corolla, Duck, and Southern Shores, where Mary Ann and Larry planted the roots for what would become their retirement home. “All is Well” in Corolla Light, became a destination for many memorable family trips. Upon retirement and moving to Corolla full time, Larry and Mary Ann enjoyed many years and developed even more cherished friendships. They were members of the Duck Woods Country Club, active members of the Duck Church, and volunteered for various organizations on the Outer Banks. Larry continued his love of reading and probably read every book in the Kill Devil Hills library. They were blessed with many good years in retirement. After Mary Ann passed, Larry moved to Queenstown, Maryland to be closer to family and his beloved cousin, Russ. His final years were blessed with great grandchildren, visits from family, dinners out, and good health. Larry continued to faithfully attend the Duck Church 8 AM service online every Sunday, where he would look for his friends far away and smile- reminded of the great times he had on the Outer Banks. Larry is survived by sons Darrell (Mary), Doug (Trish), grandchildren Joshua (Cal and Renee), Darcy (Clark), Jon (Jessie), Lauren (Caelin), Brianna (Donald), and Patrick, five great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be private. Donations marked “In memory of Larry Milburn” may be sent to Duck Church, 1214 Duck Road, Duck NC 27949. The family thanks the care providers from Home Instead and Queenstown Landing Assisted Living. These professionals helped him tremendously in the recent months – he was very appreciative of them. Larry’s faith was guided by words inscribed on his grandfather Henry Levi Good’s family marker at Denmark Manor church in Pennsylvania. We take comfort in those words now, “God is. All is well.”
