Hazel Marie Perkins

Hazel Marie Perkins, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, departed this life to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Genesis Health Care – The Pines. She died peacefully with her family at her side. She had been attempting rehabilitation after a severe stroke. She was 91. Born on December 23, 1916 at Hayden, MD, she was the ninth of ten children of Samuel and Bessie Mae Tarbutton Jester. After graduating from Church Hill High School in the 1930’s Hazel entered MacQueen Gibbs Willis School of Nursing and graduated in 1940. Her nursing profession was always a source of great pride to her. She worked at Easton Memorial Hospital doing both floor work and private duty nursing and also at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. She made lifelong friends at Memorial Hospital that carried her all through her life. On September 8, 1948 Hazel married her best friend, Carter Richardson Perkins, in Baltimore. They were devoted to one another for 40 years until Carter’s death in 1988. Hazel was a member of Christ Church in Easton, where she served on the altar guild and taught Sunday school, and was a lifetime member of the MacQueeen Gibbs Willis Nurses Alumni Association. Hazel enjoyed Sunday church services, bingo, reading, music, dancing, discussing politics, shopping, resting and most importantly being surrounded by her family. Mrs. Perkins is survived by her daughter, Susan Carter Anders and her husband Donald of Easton; three grandchildren, Cynthia Anders, Bryan Anders and his wife Michelle, and Lisa Bailiff and her husband Jason; four great-grandchildren, Brennan Anders, and Jacob, Logan and Madison Bailiff. Surviving nieces and nephews include, Ann Gill, Judy Sharretts, Francis Jester, Shirley Friel, Vernon “Sonny” Robinson, Sandra Smiley, and Edward, John and Robert Cassidy. She was predeceased by nine siblings, Cora Banning, Pearl Cassidy, Helen Robinson, Mary Jarvis, Margaret Coleman, Howard Jester, Dudley Jester, Robert Jester, and Edith Ciach. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, MD where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton, MD. Hazel had experienced many health issues in her lifetime and always attributed her recovery to her Lord working through the hands of her friend and doctor, Dr. Robert Trever and later Dr Ludwig Eglseder. Her family is eternally grateful to the William Hill Manor Community who took wonderful care of her for the last 13 years of her life. to them. During her last two weeks on this earth, Hazel was blessed to be among the Genesis Rehab staff and the Talbot House Staff. They worked tirelessly for her and on her last day helped her to die with peace and dignity. God Bless all of them.
