Gregg Remington Potvin

Gregg Remington Potvin died on December 6, 2001 of cancer at Genesis Elder Care of Spa Creek in Annapolis, MD. He was 76 years old. He was born in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Potvin served in the Army during World War II and graduated from the University of Idaho LLB in 1950. He married the late Eleanor G. Potvin on September 11, 1946. Mr. Potvin began his legal career as the prosecuting attorney for Power County, Idaho from 1950 to 1954. He was very active in the Democratic Party, assisting in the campaign for Estes Kefauver. He was elected as a state representative in the Idaho House of Representatives in 1956, and served as Majority Leader in the Idaho House of Representatives before running for the U.S. Senate in 1960. He led the Democratic primary, but lost a two-man run-off for the nomination by 357 votes. A fellowship after the Senate defeat took him to Harvard in 1961 where he received a Masters Degree in Public Administration at the Littauer School of Government. In 1961, he moved to the D.C. area where he worked for Sargent R. Shriver as Deputy Director for recruitment with the Peace Corps. He became Chief Counsel for the House Small Business Committee under the Honorable Wright Patman, and later with the Honorable James Roosevelt’s distribution subcommittee. Subsequently he worked with the Honorable John Dingell as Chief Counsel for the Small Business Subcommittee. From 1961 to 1970, he served as General Counsel for the full Committee, as well as Chief Counsel for the Subcommittee on Petroleum Marketing. He left the Government to join the National Cane Sugar Refiners Association President, and later became the Executive Vice President of the National Oil Jobbers Association (now the Petroleum Marketers Association of America) before becoming independently employed as an Anti-Trust Attorney with the firm Bassman, Mitchell and Levy providing counsel for the National Association of Texaco and Shell Wholesalers. He was admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court. Gregg retired in early 2000. He is survived by a daughter, Sally Morgan of Seattle, Washington; three sons, John Potvin of Annapolis, Maryland, Mike Potvin of Washington, D.C., and Chris Potvin of Stevensville, Maryland. He has five grandchildren and one great grand child. Memorial service will be at the St. Lukes Episcopal Church on Bay Ridge Rd., Annapolis, Maryland on Friday, December 14th at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
