Gertrude Antoinette Maltby

Gertrude Antoinette Cowen Maltby of Centreville, MD died at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, MD on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 surrounded by her loving family. She was 73. Born in Decauter, Indiana on June 7, 1934, she was the daughter of the late James George and Marian Carey Cowen. She grew up in Wabash, Indiana where she went to high school. Following graduation from high school she received her nursing degree from Holy Cross School of Nursing in South Bend, IN. She was a surgical nurse in the Davis Clinic in Indiana. She moved to Michigan and she worked at Blodgett Hospital as a surgical nurse. On June 1, 1957 she married John Michael Maltby in Wabash, IN. In the early 1960’s they moved to Maryland where she raised her family. She helped to establish the Holy Cross Hospital Emergency Room in Silver Spring, MD, she also worked at the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital. She was the Director of Clinical nursing at Randolph Hills Nursing Home in Wheaton, MD where she retired in 2001. Mr. Maltby died December 24, 2002. She was an avid reader and loved to sew. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She was a season ticket holder for the Washington Redskins and loved spending time at the beach in Ocean City. Mrs. Maltby is survived by five children, Jeffrey Maltby of Grasonville, MD, Joseph and his wife, Maria Maltby of Midlothian, MD, Kathleen and her husband, Dino Pignataro of Centreville, MD, Matthew and his wife, Sandra Maltby of Centreville, MD and Mary and her husband, Steve Gilman of Alder, MT; nine grandchildren, Emily and Elizabeth Maltby, Kiley and Shannon Pignataro, Madyson, Myles and Rowan Maltby and Jack and Joseph Gilman; two sisters, Ann Hoefer of Wabash, IN and Georgia Sue Smith of Milwaukee, WI. Funeral services at the Mother of Our Sorrows Catholic Church, Centreville on Monday, August 13, 2007 at 10:00 AM Friends may call at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., Centreville, MD on Sunday, August 12, 2007 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8PM. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Queenstown, MD.
