Gertrude Marshall

St. Michaels – Gertrude Bennett Marshall of St. Michaels departed this life on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010. Born on May 21, 1918 in Buffalo, NY, she was the daughter of William Henry Bennett and Grace Arrington. After arriving in Talbot County, she worked for the Bell Telephone Co. as an operator. She met her future husband, Norman D. Marshall, when he made long distance phone calls at night for his business. They married on December 14, 1940. They owned two businesses: Marshall’s Express and Marshall Funeral Home. During WWII, she did volunteer work for the war effort; one such job was as an aircraft spotter for the Civil Defense. Mrs. Marshall was instrumental in obtaining the first ambulance for the St. Michaels Volunteer Fire Department. She continued her volunteering throughout her life for the Junior Auxiliary at Shore Health Systems, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, of which she has been a member for 60+ years, and other local organizations. During Mrs. Marshall’s years as a volunteer, she has touched countless lives and made many friends. Mrs. Marshall is survived by her two children: Susan Marshall Brady and her husband, Norman K. Brady, and Peter Hunt Marshall and his wife, Lisa Godley Marshall; three grandchildren: George Marshall, Brent Marshall, and Heather B. Pickens; two step-grandchildren: Brittany Wiltbank and Matthew Wiltbank; one great-grandchild, Gabrielle Pickens; and three step-great-grandchildren, Chandler Dyott, Hayden Albright, and Mason Albright. Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by her husband, Norman D. Marshall, and two sisters, Jane Faulkner and Katherine Houston. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on April 15, 2010 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sam Hale officiating. Following the service, interment will be held at Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Gertrude B.
