George Olson

George Olson passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the Queen Anne’s Hospice House in Centreville, at the age of 85. George was born April 2, 1923 in Manchester, New Hampshire. After graduating high school George served in the U.S. Army overseas during World War II. After his tour of duty, he attended the University of New Hampshire obtaining a degree in business. George’s love of baseball was evident when he pitched for the University of New Hampshire baseball team. In the early 50s George moved to Annapolis and joined E. Churchill Murray and Jack Martin to establish an insurance agency known as Murray, Martin & Olson, Inc. George remained in Annapolis to raise his family and his business. George was an avid golfer and loved to enjoy the Chesapeake Bay and fishing in the Florida Keys with his family. George will be sorely missed by all that he touched. He was a man who gave meaning to the word integrity. He was a loving husband and an incredible Dad and Pop Pop. George Olson was an outstanding insurance agent that was involved in the lives and interests of his clients. In 1967 he served as the 10th president of the Associated Builders & Contractors, Chesapeake Chapter, and was the only insurance agent to do so. He was always doing the most that he could to help his clients succeed in business and in a quality of life. Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Hospice of Queen Anne’s. Hospice provided our father with an extraordinary quality of life during his days battling ALS. In addition to his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Olson of Annapolis, George is survived by 2 daughters, Jan Morgan and her husband Jim of Queenstown, Jessica Spellbring and her husband Mark of Queenstown; 2 sons, Eric Olson and his wife, Robynne of Annapolis, Lars Olson and his wife, Ayse "April" of Annapolis; 8 grandchildren, James Morgan, Steven Morgan, Brett Spellbring, Danielle Spellbring, Mattheus Olson, Kirsten Olson, and Eric Olson. George is also survived by his cherished friends, Wilfred T. and Mary Frances Azar. Family and friends may call on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 2 to 4 pm at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A., 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD 21619. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Shrewsbury Parish Church, 12828 Shrewsbury Church Road, Kennedyville, MD 21645 at 1 pm. Internment will follow at the Shrewsbury Parish Cemetery. Reception will follow at Jan Morgan’s home, 214 Belle Point Drive, Queenstown, MD 21658. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.
