Mr Gene Mallard Ransom Jr.

Gene Mallard Ransom, Jr. died Friday July 4, 2014 at Anne Arundel Medical Center at the age of 69. Born March 3, 1945 in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Gene Mallard, Sr. and Mary Jeanette Higgins Ransom. Gene grew up in southern Prince George’s County graduating high school from Woodward School in the District of Columbia. He completed a BS in physics from George Washington University in 1970, and later in life would complete his MBA at Averitt University. Gene valued education, continued to work and learn, and was very proud that of all of his children completed college with his strong encouragement. In 1970 Gene married the love of his life, Margaret “Peggy” Ransom, and shortly after marriage they moved to Queen Anne’s County where they lived the rest of his life and raised their family. He is survived by his wife Margaret P. Ransom of Grasonville; sons, Gene M. Ransom III and his wife Nicole from Queenstown, Geoffrey M. Ransom of Grasonville, and Gregory R. Ransom and is wife Catherine of Grasonville; three grandchildren, Theo Ransom, Claire Ransom and Madalynn Ransom; brother, Preston Ransom of Aquasco. He was predeceased by a daughter Stephanie Ransom and sister Margaret Ransom. Gene began his work career as a scientist for the National Dry Cleaning Association. Based on the economic realities of family life he decided to follow in father’s footsteps and become an estimator. Gene worked as an estimator for several private construction companies in the 70s and 80s. In 1991 Gene change careers going to work for the Federal Government as a manager with the General Services Administration (GSA). Gene retired from GSA in 2013. Gene loved to read, computers and collect stamps and books. During their forty-four year marriage Gene and Peggy worked together on genealogy, enjoyed bird watching and playing with their pets. However none of his hobbies rivaled his love for his family and grandchildren. A funeral will be held 11:00 am on Thursday July 10, 2014 at Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD where family and friends may visit from 6-8pm on Wednesday July 9, 2014. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Foundation for Community Partnerships, Attn: Friends of Kent Island Dog Park, 102 Chester Village, Chester, MD 21619
