Evelyn Butler Berry

Evelyn Butler Berry of Centreville passed away on February 21, 2026, at the remarkable age of 105. Born on December 27,1920 in Price, MD, she was the oldest child of Blanch Scott Butler and Calvin William Butler. The family moved to Centreville when she was two years old. She graduated from Centreville High School in 1939. After graduation, she worked for the University of Maryland Livestock Lab, then the Q.A.C. Record Observer. On December 6, 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, Oliver Allen Berry. When WWII started, she and Oliver went to work at the Munition Plant in Chestertown. When Oliver entered the Army, she went to work at Wilson Feed Company as bookkeeper. After her husband returned from the service, they bought a home in Centreville Heights in 1949, where she resided up until the time of her death. She also worked for Willis and Cecil and the C&P Telephone Company as an operator. Her final job before retirement was with Edwards Pharmacy where she worked for 25 years. She enjoyed flower gardening, swimming, sitting poolside with her family, playing golf and caring for her pets. She volunteered at the Senior Center, Corsica Hills Nursing Home and Centreville Elementary for Mrs. Hill’s third grade. She was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club, Double X Club, Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary and QAC Arts Center. She was an active member of the Centreville Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for almost sixty years and served on the finance committee for fifteen years. In 1994 she was awarded the MVC (Most Valuable Citizen of MD) by Governor Donald Shaeffer. In 2016 she was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame for her volunteer service. In 2020 she received the Governor’s Citation in recognition of her 100th birthday and in 2026 she was awarded the Continuous Member Certificate by the American Legion Auxiliary for 79 years of membership. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver, and brother, Eugene Butler. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce B. Jones (George), Bonnie B. Casey (Drew), a sister Ruth B. Tabler (Danny), four grandchildren, Trisha Thomas-Chadwick (Shawn), Reid Thomas Henry (David), Christopher Jones (Lisa), Julie Jones Church (Brian) and four great-grandchildren, Todd Jones, Hunter Mansfield, Natalie Henry and Destiny Church. A great-great granddaughter, Gabriella Jones. And a goddaughter, Jackie Potter (Donnie). A funeral service will be held at the Centreville Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on March 20, 2026. The family will receive friends one hour before.
