Elizabeth Virginia Haddaway

Elizabeth Virginia Reamy Haddaway of Grasonville died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on March 26, 2013. She was 104. Born on Kent Island on May 23, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Cliff and Roberta Reamy. Elizabeth was a spelling bee champion at school and participated in the spelling bee in Centreville at the Blue Star Hotel. She was the first in her family to attend high school in Stevensville after graduating the 7th grade. While at Stevensville High School, Elizabeth was a member of the volleyball team which won the State of Maryland Volleyball championship. After her graduation in 1926, she moved to Washington, DC, and worked for the May Co. making $10 a week. She longed to return to Kent Island and, after working in Washington for 6 months, she planned a visit home. After the long ride through Elkton and Chestertown, Elizabeth never returned to the city. She began working at the Stevensville Post Office, which was located next to the Norris Drug Store, which is now a dance studio. Later, she left the Postal Service to work for the Perfect Garment Company in Grasonville. She met George Haddaway while he was helping to build the entrance to the Matapeake Ferry System. Elizabeth and George were married in 1934 and had a son, Kenny, in 1935 and a daughter, Ruth, in 1938. Elizabeth was an honorary member of the State Temple #1 of Pythian Sisters of Maryland. Throughout their lives together, Elizabeth and George were avid dancers. She also loved to sew, work crossword puzzles and keep up with her grandchildren’s activities. Elizabeth never received her driver’s license after an unfortunate incident involving a Model T Ford and a cow, from which both she and the cow emerged unscathed. She did, however, enjoy cutting grass on her lawn mower until she was 95 years old. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Haddaway Snow; her daughter in-law, Lorraine Risley Haddaway; grandchildren: Henry W. Snow, III, Donna Snow Taylor, David W. Snow, George Kenneth Haddaway, and Lynn Haddaway Clevenger; her great-grandchildren: Ryan Snow, Shane Taylor, Shelby Taylor, Kyle Haddaway and Amanda Clevenger; great great-grandchildren, Conner Haddaway and Alexis Haddaway; a sister in-law, Dorothy H. Porter; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Haddaway; her son, George Kenneth Haddaway; her son in-law, Willis Snow, Jr.; and her siblings: Elsie Porter, Pearl Gardner, Edna Britt, Irma Britt, Presley “Buck” Reamy and Charles “Billy” Reamy. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Monday, April 1 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Chester, MD, where friends may visit with the family beginning at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Stevensville Cemetery, Stevensville, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne’s Inc., 255 Comet Dr., Centreville, MD 21617.
