Edwin Lane Cole

Edwin Lane Cole, of Queenstown, MD, passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 84. Lane, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community pillar, was a proud graduate of Centreville High School, Class of 1960. He will be forever cherished by his devoted wife of 62 years, Connie Cole (Burns). He is survived by his daughters, Daphne Fluharty (Tim) of Cordova, MD, and Stephanie Ivory (Matt) of Harrington, DE. Lane’s cherished legacy lives on through his three grandchildren, Adam Fluharty (Chelsea) of Milford, DE, Stephen Fluharty of Baltimore, MD, and McKenzie Hardy (James) of Greenwood, DE; and three great-grandchildren, Gavin, Iris, and Ellie, with another expected in October. He is also survived by his sister, Faye Anderson (Lenny) of Severna Park, MD; brother-in-law, Sonny Dodd of Queenstown, MD; sister-in-law, J. Faye Burns of Queenstown, MD; nephews, Tommy Dodd (Sandy), Bill Dodd (Christine), Lenny Anderson, and Jackson Cole; and niece, Ally Cole. Lane was predeceased by his parents, William Edwin Cole and Ellen Thomas Cole; his sister, Margaret Ann Dodd; and his brother, Ed Cole Jr. A Queenstown legend, Lane proudly served his community with unwavering dedication and integrity. As Town Commissioner and Public Works Director from May 1991 until his retirement in December 2017, he oversaw daily contractor work and major town projects, including installing water meters, developing new wells, upgrading water and sewer systems, and paving streets. His proudest achievement was helping coordinate the construction of the town’s largest project, the new wastewater treatment plant. In recognition of his service, the new public works facility was dedicated to Edwin Lane Cole. Lane’s commitment to Queenstown extended far beyond his professional roles. He proudly served the Queenstown Fire Department for 55 years, the American Legion Benedict A. Andrew Post 296, the Queenstown Lions Club, and the Bay Country Moose Lodge 831. Known as the town’s “unofficial mayor,” Lane was a fixture in the community, where his warmth, humor, and generosity touched countless lives. Above all, Lane cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and found joy in helping others. His legacy endures in the town he helped shape and the love he shared with those around him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Queenstown Fire Department or Compass Regional Hospice, located at 160 Coursevall Dr., Centreville, MD 21617. Friends may call from 6-8 PM on Monday, 12 May at Fellows, Helfenbein, Newman Funeral Home in Centreville, MD. Memorial service will be at Olde Wye Church in Wye Mills, MD on 13 May at 11 AM
