E. John Hoagland

E. John Hoagland of Venice, FL, died on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Chester River Manor, surrounded by his loving family. He was 93. Born on September 5, 1919, in Oakland, CA, he was the son of the late Oscar Augustus and Susan Patterson Hoagland. He was 1937 graduate of Peoria High School in Peoria, IL. Mr. Hoagland attended Bradley University in 1941, and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Illinois. Mr. Hoagland was accepted at Harvard Business School in New York, and instead attended Prarie State Navy Officers Training School in New York, graduating in 1942 earning the rank of Ensign. Also in 1942, he attended Diesel School at University of California. Mr. Hoagland served in the United States Navy Asiatic-Pacific Theatre from 1941 – 1946 as Lieutenant Commander. He served his country with honor and following his discharge on May 5, 1946, was released to inactive duty in the reserve remaining until 1956. Mr. Hoagland returned to Boston after discharge and married Margaret “Peggy” Karcher on October 3, 1947, and settled in Quincy, MA. He worked for Johnson Control of Wisconsin and was transferred in 1948 to Hartford, CT, to establish a new sales office for air conditioning and heating systems. In over 10 years, four children were born. In 1957, he transferred to the Philadelphia, PA, office as Mid-Atlantic regional manager. In 1972, he was International European Managing Director, living in Switzerland and Belgium. Mr. Hoagland retired from their headquarters in Milwaukee in 1985. The following year, he moved to Chestertown, MD, to “Fair Pond” farm that he previously bought in 1968. He called it “Noah’s Ark” a family refuge. In 2007, he established residency in Venice, FL. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Lindsey Hoagland in 2009; two sisters, Ruth Cohen and Dorothy Horton; a brother-in-law, Earl W. Karcher; an uncle, Jay Flagg; and wife Mattie Lee Flagg. Mr. Hoagland is survived by a daughter, Debra Susan Hoagland of Chestertown, MD; three sons, Steven John Hoagland (Belinda) of Douglasville, PA, Robert Paul Hoagland of Ft. Washington, PA and Roy Phillips Hoagland of Chestertown, MD; cousins, Sterling Flagg, Bud Flagg (Clare) of Pebble Beach, CA, and Everett Flagg of Reno, NV. Mr. Hoagland was known for his wit and charm, and priceless sense of humor, story teller of family experiences, gentleman; very generous and caring – showing concern for the needs of others. He was the family “CEO,” conservative, strong leader, devoted and loving father and husband; he gave good advice, laid down rules with reminders, protective, wonderful companion, and fair. His interests were many. Mr. Hoagland loved to travel, at home and abroad, Asia through Africa. He was an avid reader of weekly periodicals and history books, covering all wars and visiting sites of actions. He enjoyed sports, such as, swimming, golfing, and tennis. Mr. Hoagland was a member of Huntingdon Valley Country Club in Huntingdon Valley, PA, past member of Bass River Yacht Club, in Cape Cod, MA, member of Jacaranda West Country Club in Venice, FL, and past member of Rotary Club in Jenkintown, PA. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. 130 Speer Road Chestertown, MD, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior (10-11 a.m.). Interment will be in Arlington Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Humane Society of Kent County, Inc., P.O. Box 352 Chestertown, MD 21620.
