Dr. Richard Carmichael Tilghman

Dr. Richard Carmichael Tilghman, of Easton and Baltimore died at his home near Easton on Thursday, September 23, 1999. He was 95. Born in Centreville on August 20, 1904, he was the son of the late Charles Carroll and Helen B. Goldsborough Tilghman. After graduating from Centreville High School in 1921 he attended Johns Hopkins University where he received his A.B. Degree in 1925. He then did graduate work in chemistry before entering in the School of Medicine in 1928 where he earned his M.D. Degree in 1932. He completed his internship and residency in Osler Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He then was a Research Fellow in Medicine in Harvard University, Boston and then served a year as Resident Physcian, Osler Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1937 - 1967 he was in private practice in Internal Medicine in Baltimore. During World War II he served with the Army Medical Corps as a Lt. Col. With the 18th General Hospital (Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Unit) in the South Pacific and in the China -Burma- India Theatres. From April 1945 to February 1946 he was Chief of Medical Services at the Newton D. Baker Military Hospital in Martinsburg, WVA. Following his release from active duty he returned to his private practice before becoming a full time faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of University Health Services at Johns Hopkins from 1967 until retiring in 1970. During his career he was also associated as a physician with Union Memorial Hospital, Church Home and Hospital, Hospital for Women of Maryland which is now Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital where he was a consultant in cardiology. Professional society memberships included, American College of Physicians where he was made Fellow in 1942, Master in 1974, served on the Board of Governors from 1951-1960, on the Board of Regents from 1960-1974 and was Secretary-General from 1968-1974. His other professional memberships included Royal College of Physicians of Ireland where he was an Honorary Fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine; a member and Past-President of the American Clinical and Climatological Association; a member of the American Medical Association, member and Past- President of Baltimore City Medical Society; a member and Past Vice- President and Council Member of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of the State of Maryland; a member and Past-President of the Johns Hopkins and Surgical Association and a member of the American Osler Society. A Phi Beta Kappa upon graduation from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine he later received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Johns Hopkins University in 1967, the Heritage Award from Johns Hopkins University in 1974, the Alfred Stengel Memorial Award from the American College of Physicians in 1974, the Medical Alumni Service Award in 1983 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1997, both from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Tilghman was a member and Past-President of the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association and the Johns Hopkins Roll Call where he was Class Agent from 1948-1958, General Chairman from 1959-1961 and a member of the Council of Chairman since 1959. He was also a member and Past-President of TheTudor and Stuart Club and a member and Past-President of the Johns Hopkins History Club. A member of The Church of the Redeemer in Baltimore he was also a member of the Society Of the Cincinnati, Sons of the Revolution, Society of the Colonial Wars where he served on the Council and was Chairman of the Membership Committee, Descendants of the Lords of Maryland Manors, Maryland Historical Society, the Queen Annes County Historical Society, the Talbot County Historical Society, the Baltimore County Historical Society where he served on the Board of Directors and was former Vice-President, the Eastern Shore Society, the Society for the Preservation of Maryland Antiquities where he served on the Board of Directors, and the American Wing of the Baltimore Museum of Art where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Johns Hopkins Associates, the William Henry Welch Society and had established The Tilghman Traveling Fellowship. The Tilghman Room in the Turner Auditorium in Johns Hopkins University was dedicated in 1969 and a portrait of Dr. Tilghman to hang in that room was presented to the University in 1976. Socially he was a member of the Elkridge Club, The Hamilton Street Club, The Johns Hopkins Club, The Bachelors Cotillon, The Caduceus Medical Dinner Club, and the Baltimore Monthly Medical Reunion. Dr. Tilghman had also authored L. O. D., Yes-A History of the 18th General Hospital in World War II. Dr. Tilghman is survived by his wife, the former Mary Donnell Singer whom he married in 1945; four children, Joanna Lloyd Tilghman of Cambridge, Richard Carmichael Tilghman, Jr. and John Addison Singer Tilghman, both of Baltimore and Helen Tilghman Gordon of Charlottesville, VA and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at 10:00 AM at The Church of the Redeemer, 5603 North Charles Street, Baltimore. Private burial will be at Wye House Graveyard near Easton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Fund For Johns Hopkins Medicine, Reed Hall, 1620 McElderry Street, Baltimore, MD 21205.
